Area Resorts Expand Open Terrain
By M. Scott Smith, DCSki Editor

January 1, 1998 — Cold temperatures and the recent snowstorm have allowed area ski resorts to open additional terrain. Despite today’s frigid temperatures (with a high remaining below freezing), this weekend will bring a warming trend that will temporarily suspend snowmaking at most area resorts. By Monday, temperatures will be climbing towards 50 degrees.

Area resorts, having built up a solid base, should be able to weather out the warming trend. Snowmaking will continue as long as temperatures permit, so be sure to bring your goggles if you visit during the next several days. Special pricing is in effect at some resorts; contact the respective resorts for more information. The following summarizes current conditions at area resorts.

Ski Liberty

Liberty now has 9 slopes open, with a base depth from 12-20 inches. All lifts (except the Children’s Handle) are in operation. Open trails, ranging from easy to extremely difficult, include the First Class Skier Area, Nova, Sneaky Pete, Dipsy Doodle, Adventure Alley, Heavenly, Ultra, the Snowboard Park, and Upper Ultra.

Ski Roundtop

Roundtop has 9 slopes open, with a base depth from 14-24 inches. All lifts except Ramrod triple, the Fanny Hill J-Bar, and the Tubing lifts are in operation. Open trails include the Discovery Area, Fife and Drum, Fanny Hill, the Terrain Garden, Lower Lafayette’s Leap, Minuteman, Susquehanna, Upper Lafayett’s Leap, and the Snowboard Half-Pipe.

Seven Springs

Seven Springs has opened 100% of their terrain, including 26 slopes and trails and the Snowboard Half-Pipe. A 30-38 inch base can be found in snowmaking areas, with a 10-14 inch base in natural snow areas. 8-10 chairlifts and 5-6 surface lifts are in operation.

Snowshoe

Snowshoe, having received a whopping 33 inches of snow from the recent snowstorm, has 40 trails open between Snowshoe and Silver Creek, with a base depth of 50-80 inches. Snowshoe recently opened all of the 1.5-mile advanced Cupp Run. 10 chairlifts and 1 handle tow are in operation. More terrain will open by the weekend.

Whitetail

Whitetail recently opened Upper Angel Drop and Homerun, serviced by the Whitetail Express, Whitetail’s high-speed quad. Whitetail now has 7 trails open, with a base depth ranging from 15-36 inches. Velvet, Almost Home, Northern Lights, Stalker, Home Run, and Upper Angel Drop are open.

Wisp

17 trails are open at Wisp, with a base depth of 20-46 inches. Snowmaking operations are concentrated on Beaver, Down Under, Rabbit Run, Odin’s Chute, Main Street, and Eye Opener, and these slopes are expected to open soon. 5 lifts are in operation.
