Condition Roundup
By M. Scott Smith, DCSki Editor

March 2, 1998 — Ski Roundtop, Ski Liberty, and Whitetail have finally succumbed to the mild winter. All three resorts are temporarily closed; Roundtop aims to re-open Wednesday, while Liberty and Whitetail have their eye on colder mid-week temperatures in the hopes that they will be able to resume snowmaking and re-open.

Ski Liberty

Ski Liberty is currently closed. The resort will re-open if colder temperatures return and snowmaking can resume.

Snowshoe

Snowshoe received an additional inch of snow Saturday, followed by 3-4 on Sunday, for a grand total of over 174 inches for the season. With daytime temperatures in the mid-40’s, Snowshoe has put snowmaking on hold but plans to resume when temperatures permit. All 54 trails at Snowshoe and Silver Creek are open with a base depth from 38-86 inches. Snowshoe reports that the moguls are growing on Lower Cupp and Bear Claw. A DCSki reader visited Snowshoe on Sunday and raved about the new layer of snow received Sunday, particularly the untracked powder on Cupp.

Ski Roundtop

Ski Roundtop is currently closed. The resort plans to re-open Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m., and will attempt to remain open through Sunday. Snowmaking will resume if temperatures permit.

Seven Springs

Seven Springs has all 14 slopes and 14 trails open, with a base depth from 36-46 inches in snowmaking areas and 0-4 inches in natural snow areas. Conditions are groomed granular.

Whitetail

Whitetail is currently closed. The resort plans to re-open if colder mid-week temperatures permit snowmaking.

Wisp

Wisp has all trails open except Devil’s Drop and Deer Run, with a base depth from 24-82 inches. Conditions are machine groomed, wet and packed powder. Wisp has received unusual weather patterns in past days, delivering a mix of snow and freezing drizzle. Wisp expects to receive snow later this week. Wisp does not currently plan on making additional snow this season.
