Bike the Bay for MS
By M. Scott Smith, DCSki Editor

May 14, 1997 — The Maryland Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society will be sponsoring a “Bike the Bay Bike Tour” where bikers can raise money to fight MS while enjoying Maryland scenery. This bike tour, the first in a series of three, will be held on Saturday, August 9. Riders will be taken through Anne Arundel and Calvert Counties past waterways, unspoiled farmland, and the rolling hills of the Chesapeake Bay region. Three different routes are being offered based on ability, covering 17, 30, or 50 miles across flat terrain and rolling hills.

On Sunday, July 13, an “Assateague Adventure” tour will be offered, starting at the Kiwanis Pavilion in Salisbury, Maryland and winding through Assateague State Park and Worcester and Wicomico counties. 30, 70, and 100 mile routes across flat terrain will be offered.

Finally, on Sunday, September 28, a “Harvest” tour will be offered. This tour starts at the Fiore Winery in Pylesville, Maryland and travels through Rocks State Park and Harford County. 25 or 50 mile routes will be available, consisting mainly of rolling hills.

Four or more cyclists can form a team for a $45 registration fee. Individual registration fees are $15 for one two, $25 for two tours, and $30 for all three tours. Cyclists are asked to seek pledges from friends and co-workers to help raise money to fight MS. Prizes will be given to the top fund raisers. The person who brings in the most donations (minimum $3,000 in pledges) will win a 5 night / 6 day stay at the Don CeSar Beach Resort and Spa in St. Petersburg, Florida. Those raising $100 will receive a $10 bike shop certificate. Fund raisers bringing in higher amounts of donations will receive larger bike shop gift certificates and/or shorts and a jersey. All participants will receive a commemorative event T-shirt.

The National MS Society will provide bikers with a light breakfast and high-energy snacks every 10-15 miles along the route. Lunch will also be provided. On road support, including mechanical, medical, and communication support, will also be provided along the route.

All bikers must wear a helmet and you must be six or older to participate. Participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Pledge minimums are $75 for each tour, and are due within 30 days after the tour.

According to the MS Society, Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that randomly attacks the nervous system, wearing away control over the body. Symptoms may range from numbness to paralysis and blindness. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. MS is devastating because it is so unpredictable; attacks of varying severity may occur at any time.

For more information and a registration form, contact the MS Cycling Hotline at (410) 821-8626 or 1-800-FIGHT-MS.
