Headed to Snowshoe 12/20 for a couple of days (from DC).  Do we anticipate at some point that Corridor H will make it logical to come down 219 through Elkins and arrive at Snowshoe from the West?  Or should you always just take 220 south from Moorefield?

It may sound like a good idea but using Corridor H via Parsons get to Snowshoe it may add needless time and miles.  As well, the road will take you through the center of Elkins and the box store megapolis with dozens of traffic lights south on 219 through Beverly and then Huttonsville.  IMHO the only reason to travel that way is to stop at Campbell's Market in Beverly and pick up some of the best meats in the East to grill at Snowshoe.  I love that place

My favorite road is 18 miles longer but it normally saved me five driving minutes as well as the Moorefield/Petersburg traffic at 25 MPH, the several traffic lights, the chicken trucks, and the ubiquitous speed traps.  I continued on Corridor H past Moorefield and exited on Patterson Creek Road (Rt 5) and took Patterson Creek South to 42, turn left on 42 and it rejoins Route 28 past the Sheetz at the end of Petersburg.  Longer but faster and more pleasant.

They've openned up another 1.5-2 miles of Corridor H from the Liberty Gas station exit to the first overpass at Rt.93.

Bueno!  Is that past Mt. Storm lake/power plant, or before it (heading in the direction of Davis)?

From Rt 48 you exit onto RT93 about 1.5 miles from the Liberty gas station.  They have shifted traffic onto a couple of new sections of the road between Mt. Storm and Davis, but it still jus a two lane road.

Have the notorious speed traps of Moorefield and Petersburg moved up to Corridor H yet?

Yes they have.  Also be careful on the last stretch coming into Davis where the Speed limit is 45 all the way from Corridor H to Davis.  They definitely enforce the 45 mph.  You will be tailgated if you go under 50 by all the folks that haven't gotten a ticket there yet but so be it.

Drove it yesterday and after looking at what is and isn't open, the main reason it appears to be closed prior to Mt Storm is the lack of guardrails.

Right now that stretch is a bit of a cluster.

Heading up, Corridor H is extended about 1-2 miles from last year. You are then forced to exit onto Rte 93, and head past the lake/power plant. Past the really bad hairpin (railroad tracks), you do another hairpin onto one side of finished 4 lane; but traffic is two way on the finished two lanes. Minimal signage and minimal center lane double yellow marking. I wasn't certain that I wasn't heading down the wrong direction of a limited access highway, and I've driven that road 50+ times in the past. If they don't finish some more of the road soon, that spot is gunna be fun at night under bad conditions with holiday tourists driving.

Back onto Rt 93, back onto 2-way traffic on 1/2 of Corridor H, back onto Rt 93 around the Juvie Center.

Yeah.

What route do you recommend from Harrisonburg at the moment?  I'm driving from Mnut to Davis in early Jan with a friend.  Staying one night at the CV Lodge so that we can check out CV and Tline for the first time.

Rt. 33 will still be the quickest route to Tline & CVR.  Corridor H won't help you from the Hburg, unless you're going to Davis or you're making the trip in a blizzard.

Do you think this will be true even after Corridor H is completed? I would tend to agree - from Hburg it is about 2 hours to TL via rt 33/rt 32. Using corridor H involves making your way north and west to Wardensville to access the new highway, and then coming south from Thomas along rt 32. Would that route ever take less than 2 hours from Hburg?

Take VA 259 off  I-81, head past Lost River and then pick up Corridor H at Baker.  No need to go all the way up to old 55 and on to Wardensville.  I doubt heading all the way to Strasburg is any faster.  Also, there may actually be a difference if you are heading the CV proper versus Davis.

Ok,

Just checked both options on google maps:

RT 33/Rt 32 N, Hburg to timberline:  90 miles, 2 hrs and 3 minutes

RT 259/Corridor H/RT 93/Rt 32 S, Hburg to timberline: 120 miles, 2 hrs and 16 minutes

I am guessing it will be more or less a wash  once Corridor H is completed. As mentioned earlier, in bad weather the Corridor H route would give you the advantage of not having to deal with the switchbacks on Rt 33 (although the one time I drove Corridor H I had to deal with some pretty gusty winds)

Awhile back I figured that heading up to corr h vs Hburg Would only add 10 more min to trip but was worth it not having to look over to 3 sick dogs and my sicker fiancee for life.. .... I like the Harrisonburg to the valley route because I treat it as my personal go cart track and like to time myself and the practice over the years has really made me good!...I think ive passed only 2 cops in many many years of driving this route and my place is on the south side of Canaan which makes it better for me....once corr h is done ill be retiring from the racetrack....

Love the Hburg to the valley route and the fact that I know pretty much all the turns now, and that after each mountain pass the landscape gets snowier and snowier. I'll miss it when I start using Corr H more (but I won't miss driving the switchbacks in a blizzard).

This is standard equipment for the 32/33 route to Timberline.  No lie, this photo was taken on the way there about an hour away.  He made it there without puking last time but it was close!

We tool the longer way out of there on the way home.  The wind farm out that way is a sight to see.

Being I live in Lost River and travel to both Moorefield and Harrisonburg frequently, I can tell you it's a very easy and fast drive from Harrisonburg back to Mt. Storm using the 259 and Corridor H route.  You can stay on I-81 to exit 257 at Broadway/Mauzy, and follow the signs to 259.  This bypasses most all of the 25mph enforced speedlimit in downtown Broadway, VA when coming via the Rt 42 way.  When leaving Broadway at the last stop light, Exxon station and Dollar General store, getting back to Lost River is roughly 25 min when going 55-60mph.  There are no mountains, hills, or anything else.  This is entirely flat valley driving.

From Lost River to Baker it's exactly 10 min so you are looking at a 35min drive from the Broadway town limits to Baker.  40 min if you get off of i-81 and goto Baker.  Short of WV state police and Hardy Co Sheriff's Department watching 259, you should be able to make good time.  Unable to avoid the deputies... as several live here in Lost River.
