Significant snowmaking and energy efficient improvements are on tap at West Virginia’s Winterplace Ski Resort, as it begins a two-year, multi-million dollar capital improvement project. With support from a USDA energy efficiency improvement grant, the ski area is making upgrades to its snowmaking system, slope lighting, and HVAC systems.
In preparation for the upcoming ski season, Winterplace has replaced over a mile of snowmaking pipe, and has added 26 HKD snow guns. 20 additional snow guns will be installed next summer, as the resort continues its investment to increase snowmaking efficiency and quality.
The resort is in the process of upgrading its lighting system, blanketing the ski slopes with energy-efficient, LED lighting. 50 new slope lights will be in place for this winter, with 200 additional lights scheduled to be installed next summer.
“The [USDA] grant enables us to accelerate key upgrades across the resort, significantly reducing our energy consumption during peak winter months,” explained General Manager Josh Faber. “Our focus is always on elevating the guest experience - by producing not just more snow, but consistently superior, high-quality snow that sets us apart. These improvements will ensure Winterplace remains a top destination for families to enjoy Winter outdoor fun now and for generations to come,” he added.
In addition to these upgrades focused on energy efficiency, Winterplace will also be unveiling a brand new Terrain Park this season. The Fire Tower Park will be located on a new trail off Country Roads. Winterplace is reviving its weekly “Throwdown Thursday” video contest, challenging freestyle enthusiasts to showcase their skills. Two Rail Jams and Mini Big Air contests are expected to be held during the season.
The Mountain House Cafe has been remodeled with new flooring, counters, and kitchen equipment, and $100,000 of new gear has been added to the rental inventory, along with a streamlined rental process.
In addition to continuing clinic programs focused on junior ski racing, Winterplace will be unveiling a new women’s ski clinic this season.

Had a great afternoon at Winterplace in 2021, sandwiched between morning and evening rainstorms. I enjoyed the layout - open slopes mixed with wooded runs, and separated by levels. From looker's left to right in the aerial photo: blacks, then blues, then greens.
Winterplace seems to be well-managed and well-maintained.
Glad to see these efficiency projects underway. Thanks for the update, Scott!
