2021 Whale Watchers Thread
November 15, 2021
Snowmaking has begun in earnest at the highest altitude mountains in the Southeast. Sugar and Beech mountains are going at it hammer and tongs. Snowshoe is, Timberline doesn't have anything visible from their webcam. This coming week might be enough for someone to put something skiable together...
oh joy oh bliss: Heavenly opens in one week.
NC areas seem to be shut down for the heat of the day. App and Cat got on the board overnight. Snowshoe is still cranking, and nothing on the cameras at Timberline yet. Down the road at Canaan, there's an excavator and a loader working on something right below the quad - possibly a leak, possibly something electrical.
Snowguns currently on at Timberline.
Ski Sugar opens today, with top to bottom skiing and plenty of snowmaking on open terrain. Beech and Cat can't be too far behind.
So great to see this happening so early at Timberline. Prior owners never would have done this. After the brief warmup midweek they should really be able to build up things quickly starting on Friday going into next week.
I'm very curious how they'll play it. They're aggressive as heck over at Perfect North, but there are far more people in easy day trip range there. I can see arguments for stockpiling and opening on say 2nd weekend December with excellent conditions and coverage - it's easier to make snow if you aren't worried about guests, especially using the trailer fans they still have dozens of - or for blasting open a green and a blue ASAP and staking a firm claim to equal first in WV alongside Snowshoe.
Hoping for the latter approach as I have a season pass and am ready to ski!
