DCSki Gathering Blue Knob, PA Feb 22-24, 2013

Folks, just want to post a heads-up for those who haven't heard and may be interested. A gang of DCSki (and Epicski) aficionados are planning to gather at Blue Knob ski area over the weekend of Feb 22-24, 2013. Some of us have been plotting this for a while and are renting group house(s), but day trippers and last minute DIY participants are most welcome to join us for turns.

We've done this annually the past few years at Mid-Atlantic locations with typically about 2-3 dozen participants including a friendly mix of day trippers and overnighters of varied abilities. It's likely some/all of the group will be skiing for parts of Fri, Sat and Sun, with the biggest attendance on Saturday. The age spread of past participants ranged from kids to 70+, originating from NC, SC, OH, VA, MD, WV, PA, DC, and beyond. As the date approaches we'll share more info about conditions, tickets, directions, etc.
Think Snow,
Jim K.

I have always wanted to do this but the timing has never worked out. If I did it this year it would be with my 7 year old. If anyone with kids of a similar age are interested in going could you let me know? Would be fun for the kids to ski together (and maybe for the parents to share supervising so that dad can hit Extrovert a few times).

There is a fellow (expert) coming up from NC with 10 year old son (novice skier). I could put you in touch with him to see if potential for opportunity you seek.

Father and son from NC won't be skiing Friday. Will be there all Saturday. Not sure they'll ski much on Sunday morning. I'll be doing the same 400 mile drive on Sunday. But I get to arrive on Friday morning.

Just want to bump this with event getting close. Looks like weather forecast is mostly favorable, esp if numerous chances for precip are all white. A bunch of us will be up there either way. Let me know if questions or just look for crowd with red ribbons tied to ski poles, Fri-Sun.

This is on and here's info on MEET UP TIMES/PLACE

Have a red ribbon or something red somewhere visible on your ski pole or helmet.

Friday 10 AM in lodge in front of fireplace

Friday 12 Noon in front of the lodge where the chairs unload?

Saturday 9:00 to 9:30AM; 10:30 to 10:45AM and 1:00 to 1:15PM, in front of lodge where chairs unload.

Sunday same times and place as Saturday. Retro clothing encouraged for 930am Sunday meet?

Look for red ribbons if new to the group. Big crowd this year, could be 30+ on Saturday and could break up into various compatible skill levels after a while.

What an enjoyable weekend was had by the 30+/- folks from DCSki and Epic ski that hit the mountain at Blue Knowb this past weekend. A special thanks to JimK who once again organized the event. Others will be posting photos, and more details. But a KUDOS to all for attending, enjoying each other's company, and in general, having a blast. It is great to put faces and names together from posters on DCSki.

JimK,

It looks like you had a lot of fun. How was the weather on Sunday? I was planning on heading up on Sunday with my youngest boys, but the weather didn't look too promising, plus my 6yr daughter worked her way into the trip. So in lieu of driving 3.5hrs and potentially skiing a frozen glacier, we opted for sunny skies and 45f weather at Liberty.

I guess I'll have to keep BK on the bucket list.

The Blue Knob cloud was in effect most of the weekend. As you may know, we skied in a freezing mist all day on Friday. The high was only about low to mid 20s and frustratingly it was one of the coldest days I've experienced in recent years when the precip was not snow, but trail surfaces were pretty good, however they did not open Extrovert. Saturday was a good ski day, started cool and frosty, but we saw the sun for a couple hours on Saturday afternoon and the snow softened up. Many gave Extrovert a try and it was pretty fun. Sunday was cool again, high about 30 or less and no sun. Flurries started about mid-morning and kept getting heavier, we got about two inches of new snow during the ski day on Sunday by the time I left at 4pm, so it was pretty good. 10 miles down the hill there was no snow for the rest of the drive back to DC.
