The finale of it's winter carnival was the launching of the biggest firework ever launched, the shell weighed more than 2700 pounds and was 62 inches in diameter, attained an altitude of about a mile, and produced a visual display of somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 mile in width. 

 

Steamboat failed in a previous atempt last year as the shell exploded on the ground. This year a high snowfall total in the last few days complicated the process.

Wow.  Don't know if it was just the camera or that 62" charge really did the trick.  That looked like a nuclear detonation for a second there:-)
