I know.. Its the middle of ski season, but this picture is bugging me...

I was looking at photos on google maps tagged as being atop Tuscarora Mt along US 30 in McConnelsburg, PA. Up popped a picture of This ski area. It's not Whitetail, and its not the Richmond Furnace lost area, and I am pretty positive that its not even anywhere NEAR where the person tagged it, but what ski area is it?? There are 4 other pictures that appear to be from the same overlook. (click on "free wheelin franklin"and scroll down on left)

I will agree that it's nowhere near the Mountain House restaurant. I live near there and drove past it twice this weekend. There is no ski area visible from there. Both Whitetail and Richmond are close, but not visible

Rte 9W, West Point, NY

That's a long way from McConnellsburg, PA

Thanks! Been busy close to home with a building project and work.  Skiing mostly at Wisp this year when I can get away.

Avoiding PA and their excuse to pull people over with out of state plates. It would be my luck to pass a bored trooper on US219

Good God! How did you ever figure that out !!! Are you a remote sensing guy?!?!? I was pretty good at it way back in the day as an analyst ...

It was pretty elementary, once I studied the related photos. To the left, in the background, was a set of buildings surrounding a large open area. the set of buildings suggest school, the large open area in the center suggest parade grounds, (and therefore a Military school). There was also the body of water with a bend, and a bridge/causeway. The overall foliage suggested Eastern US. The only two large military academies I could think of that would meet that criteria would be Norwich University and West Point. Norwich's ski hill closed in the 90s. So, it was simple to match the location of the hill, river, and buildings with imagery from google maps/google earth.

Uh, yea, no.

I'm a vector guy rather than a raster/remote sensing guy. Even so, I also wondered how you figured that out and am even more impressed now that you've spelled it out.

The Rodney H. Smith Trail was named after the father of an old member TeleRod 15. I think that was his screen name. JimK and GG, we know that guy. ;~)

Colonel, you've skied with him and his mono tele-board during numerous gatherings. Let's just say that the trail was not the only thing that was named after his father. :~)

iirc, he (Telerod) was a paddler and was friends with a guy I work with. I will have to ask after him.
