In a grouptext over the last couple of days in between lamenting how boring our NYE were, I mentioned I'd be game for ringing in the New Year at the top of the ski slope. One of my friends said "better go to Vermont or Tahoe." This got me thinking, what's the closest place to DC to actually ski into the new year? I'd be up for that someday...

If you can go back in time, Whitetail was an amazing place to ring in the New Year on December 31, 2017.

Not sure who currently offers it.  I've done it a few times long ago.  Some resorts would offer a very affordable 9pm to -1am ticket for that night.  About 20 years ago I did it at Whitetail with about six in my minivan, then I had to drive from approx 1am to 4am to get home near Fredericksburg.  Seriously bleary eyed that night!  New Year's Eve is not exactly a great night to spend many hours on the road :-o

Okay, so I didn't image New Year's on the mountain being a thing - it just isn't anymore :(

I'm probably a few years before I'm able to do it any way, so hopefully, someone will come around and have reasonable lodging prices nearby.

Not really close to DC, but Keystone celebrated the east coast new year with fireworks at 10 pm

No actually skiing to be had at actual midnight unless you XC ski, but.....  every year the new Timberline has a torchlight parade at 8pm, followed by rail jam competition and night skiing till like 10 or 11. (usually stops at 8)  And of course bands inside the lodge until after midnight

Its a blast!  plan for next year!!!   Canaan resort has fireworks at the their main lodge at midnight.
