Always good to know when Whitetail opens. Nice alternative to 7S/LM/HV on Epic. Usually do one visit per season there.
Just a head's up for anyone considering visiting Whitetail: the Whitetail Express lift broke down on opening day and is still down on Sunday. The resort reports that it is undergoing repairs and that they'll be completed as quickly as possible, but hasn't indicated the nature of the problems. That lift is the only way to access a large amount of terrain at Whitetail (the bulk of intermediate trails and the backside, where the experts are located). Whitetail is running the Expert's Choice Quad, but to get to it, you have to hike in via Fallmount. Doable, but certainly an aerobic workout you'll want to be prepared for. (The bonus is that you'll have Exhibition basically all to yourself.)
All of the other lifts are spinning so if your focus is on the greens at Whitetail, no worries, other than the possibility that they might be more crowded without the intermediates being available. But if your hope is to ski Whitetail's 935-foot vertical intermediates, definitely check with th resort before making the drive to avoid possible disappointment.
The Whitetail Express is the original opening-day high-speed quad manufactured by CTEC, a company that later merged with Garaventa and then later merged into Doppelmayr. At 34 years, it is one of only a few vintage era CTEC detachables still in operation in the U.S. High-speed lifts are much more challenging to maintain than fixed-grip lifts, and are typically replaced between 25-35 years old.
