CV opening date is late this year
November 9, 2007
I was just looking at options for some early turns and noticed that CV has the anticipated opening date of December 22 this year. They used to open for T-giving weekend annually, even if it was only with just B lift. What's up? T-line is opening on the 6th and their closing is the latest in the mid-atlanitc on April 6th. Are they under new management or just want to make sure they have adequate terrain open before opening?
I can only remeber them opening on Thanksgiving once. Typically they do not open 'till mid December. Last year was brutal financially on resorts that tried to pen early because every time they cranked up the guns was followed by a warm spell.
If you plan on December 15th as the usuall time you won't get too dissappointed. If the early season is colder than normal, they will open earlier, if it is warmer they will open later. I would not take the December 22nd date to heart. If there is snow, they will open.
So just THINK SNOW
Their "later than" opening dates have just been a recent thing. Recent meaning the past four or five years. There have been years, at t-giving, when they were open from the top (albeit rare) but usually from mid station, and if unusually warm only the B hill. I guess they figure why risk it in December. They have limited snowmaking as it is and with the dry fall this may be the best move for them. I just don't know. I find it highly unusual that they announced the 22nd. This will give them only a 3 month season, if lucky.
It seems to me the ski business at CV before Xmas is really more about employment than making money. The past few years they've offered $5 lift tickets if you bring in a toy for "Toy's for Tots". Heck, my wife stocked up on $5 toys at the Davis dollar store just for pre-xmas turns.
