Snowshoe's Facebook page says they will start making snow Saturday night! I wonder if they will be able to open as early as they did last year (which was November 21st if I remember correctly).

On another note - it looks like there won't be a webcam again this year. I asked the question on their Facebook page and this was their response:

Quote:
Probably not. It's so hard to keep one going up here because of the winds and freezing temperatures at the top of the mountain. It's not worth the investment, or the time it would take our employees to keep it up all the time. I think we'd hear more complaints about the camera being down, then we do now for not having one!

Say What ? Abasin has one on top of the norway lift. Loveland at peak 9. Even sugar has one at 5000'. They work great. Come on, the shoe would get a lot more love for putting up a couple of well-sheltered webcams. Act like you love skiing! (and see you in December, btw)

Colonel, I'm guessing you can't view it unless you are a member. If you're a member, look for me.

That's funny... a little corporate censorship, eh?

What did you say in your comment?

I just made the comment that I felt they would be just find getting a webcam, because resorts out west put them at mid-mountain and on top, with no problem at all. Guess they didn't want ANY sort of negative publicity.

I apologize, I just can't resist...

You certainly do NOT want winds and freezing temperatures at a ski resort. Good thing they don't have that problem at Copper Mountain - another Intrawest resort: http://www.coppercolorado.com/the_mountain/mountain_cams/motel6.htm !!!

ahhh, how many more days until *we* ski ?

I wander if they are going to blow snow tonight like they said?? Seems silly since it is going to be in the mid 60's by Wednesday.

It sounded like the guns were blowing this morning around 10:30 but I don't know what they plan for tonight.

Yeah. Every day that goes by NOAA keeps going higher and higher for temps this week. Looking now like we may hit 75.

Certainly they wouldn't be dumb enough to blow snow in hopes to start building a base over a month in advance. Come on, it's mid October. Sounds like more balls than brains, if that's indeed the case. I doubt it though. They're just in it for the publicity at this point.

Great pics... gets me fired up! The season is starting. Yes, Snowshoe fired the guns to test and for the great publicity, but you would be surprised how long base piles of ice can last at that altitude.
Snowshoe...GOING FOR IT! Opening in November! Gotta love it.

LOL at the "we have wind, snow, and cold" excuse for not having a webcam. They have one on top of Mt. Washington home to what many consider the worst weather on the planet. But noooooo!!! Snowshoe's weather is much too extreme for a webcam.
