Looking for day trip this Sunday. Never been to Blue Knob and was debating whether it's worth the drive from Balto for the day. With less than 50% open, is it worth the extra 1 1/2 hour drive? Is my estimate on how much longer of a drive accurate (heading up I-70)? Or should I just stick with Whitetail (with 100% open, high speed quad, etc...). I know Sundays can be really crowded at Whitetail. (I ski everything at Whitetail except for the bumps.)

Blue Knob is definately worth the drive if you consider yourself an expert skier looking for steeps and less than perfect surface conditions. Their web site says they are making snow and plan to have more of the lower mountain open. I have a trip report here: BK TR from early this month after a good snow fall and heres an article about our gathering there last year: Fristhand Report

If you're looking for perfect conditions you should wait until after a good snowfall but even still I think their long groomed trails will keep you interested for a day. Prepare for hard surfaces though.

Besides the exceptionally challenging terrain, Blue Knob is also pretty good for mob avoidance. A lot of times on weekends Blue Knob is only a little busier than Whitetail is on weekdays.
I believe a lot of Fairfax County Virginia schools are off today and Monday. If we get a dusting of snow in DC/Balt area on Sat morning it could bring out the snowriding hoards??

I'd have to say no. They need more snow to make it worth it. If you go tomorrow, you may never go back. It's really good when it's good, and really difficult when it's not. But, if steep boilerplate is your thing, then go for it. I live near WT, and go to BK whenever it's good, and this ain't the weekend for me
