What's the timeframe on this? Was just about to look into booking something in the valley for this weekend. Now I'm concerned about being able to get there.

Looks like it'll start during the day Friday up there. The forecast here in SW VA says after midnight Thursday.

You might want to leave early but you'll definitely want to go.

Looking now to see if the rest of my group can skip work on Friday. If that's anywhere close to accurate I don't think any of us want to be driving in it at night. Especially since I haven't gotten around to picking up those snow tires yet.

I plan on getting to the Valley by 2pm on fri but not so concerned since they take care of the roads up there..just don't get there too late!.
.Hey Abe..we go thru harrisonburg on the way to the valley and we take Erickson st around downtown. Me and the Better always say that if had to move from the beach we would like to live off of that street where you get a great view of the farms and mountains!

PS.Everyone, models included are still trying to figure out if the storm will hangout for awhile in the mid atl or scoot out to sea before too much damage is done..We don't want it to snow so hard that it ruins our skiing do we? crazy

Of course, models are just models.

It's looking like I can set things up to leave Friday morning and arrive just when the flakes start to fall.

This system that's moving through right now is actually dropping a bit of snow. Wouldn't be surprised if Snowshoe got 4-6" today/tonight.

Yeah, it's been steady here since 7 this morning. And still nothing in the Valley. The DS Cam has been clear all morning. What's up with that??

BTW, I may be checking things out at the Shoe tomorrow, just to verify if they got that 4-6 you're talking about. I'll check back in later...

The biggest question is how much of this turns to ice.

Didn't think a 2 inch snowstorm with this kind of winter would be worth mentioning & i kinda hope it doesn't blow up any bigger because sometimes that seems to mess up the following BIGUN eek..i think we are good to go though with the next one. 1st warm Snow in a while huh murphy?..freeze up is what your worried about..the next one is to be a warmer too with some of the heaviest snows near the rain line...you'll have to smell the rain if you want the biggest dumpage!..This Storm will probably end the Snowmaking operations in the Valley....

Not to get ahead of ourselves but there's another storm coming down the pipeline (not today's or Friday's). Looks like there's more snow coming Sunday.

I'd plan on staying a couple of days extra if I were heading to the valley this weekend.

I wish I could, but the rest of my remaining vacation time is already dedicated for a Tahoe trip at the end of the month.

School still out in Cary?? Thats the South..Geeeze..Abe lives in Harrisonburg..where ya at Abe?..I'm Guessing another 5 inches for the town with the radar showing the last of it leaving.
Did you & the Junior miss have a good time at Mass few weeks ago? I remember we were talkin about the weather for that day & drove by there that sat on the way to canaan.
If Canaan Valley gets half of the Snow that could fall this weekend they will pass Vail,Co & Stowe,VT in Snow totals for the year..& be right on Jay peaks behind!...Think Snow!

PS..Canaan uses NWS OBS while Stowe/Vail/Jay are Resort OBS (please correct me if I am wrong)..we could be above them allready..

Yeah, Wake County decided to join with the surrounding counties and give up for Wed instead of just opening late. The secondary roads where the school buses go are still pretty messy in a lot of places.

I went up to WTG on Sun with some other adults. But Marz Jr. likes Mnut better. With season passes, that makes driving a little farther somewhat reasonable.

The only day that wasn't good at Mnut so far was Feb. 17 because of the rain. We were with friends so the girls went to the waterpark that day. I tested out my new rain gear. Snow was fine, but visibility in the clouds was tough at the top. We have a couple more weekend trips planned for Feb. Hoping the snow doesn't make driving too difficult. The adventure in Dec was enough.

Conditions were great at the nut last night - I was up there from about 4-8pm. The snow report said they got 5" last night... but it felt like it was a bit more than that since the snow was accumulating faster on the slopes. Down here in town it looks like we only got around 3" or so.

Here are a few pics I took when I was out there... it was really coming down at some points:

An the next, and the next, and the next . . . . . . .

Fish and L-Ski where are you all man!! I am more interested in your thoughts on next weekend and the second "Miller B" punch next week. Could it be a great Pres. weekend?????

MID ATLC OFFSHORE STORM DAY 3 SAT HAS A GOOD CONSENSUS AMONG MODELS FOR HEAVY RAINFALL OVER THE SOUTHEASTERN SEABOARD. A VERY HEAVY EVEN CRIPPLING SNOW IS LOOKING LIKELY OVER A RELATIVELY SMALL AREA FROM SRN NJ/SOUTHEAST PA/DE/MD/NRN AND WRN VA/ERN WV DAY 3 FRI NIGHT INTO SAT. THIS AREA WILL BE UNDER THE RIGHT REAR ENTRANCE REGION OF THE NRN STREAM JET WITH A BRIEF COUPLING OF THE SRN STREAM LEFT FRONT EXIT REGION WITH VERY STRONG VERTICAL VELOCITIES. OVERALL MODEL QPF CONSENSUS AVERAGE OF A LARGE AREA OF
1-1.5 LIQUID EQUIVILENT OVER AREAS COLD ENOUGH FOR SNOW INDICATES POTENTIAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS IN THE 1-2 FOOT RANGE.

I stay away from ski areas on Pres weekend so I'm putting all my eggs in this weekends basket...I posted a couple of days ago that maybe we shouldn't wish for a snow so big it screws up the skiing..what if we can't get out of the place we are staying at to get to the slopes?....My answer is..Bring a broom with a long handle to brush of the sat dish, get your bread & milk & stock up on hangover remedies for when the slopes do get accesable!!! crazy laugh....

1.5 inches of QPF would have given us about 4 foot back when it was colder!..It should start off a wet snow but will powder up in the highcountry later on sat.....Keep yer skis crossed!

Hey Andy, I'm hoping to get up tomorrow, but from the looks of things the storm for early next week promises to almost do the same as the one tomorrow. As I understand the pattern, we may be seeing a couple of storms a week for the next several. grin grin grin I took the wrong time to not retire.. cry

The Winter Storm Warning for the Shenandoah Valley is now calling for 20-28" of snow through Saturday evening! WOW!

Looks like I'll be leaving for Canaan Valley sometime tomorrow morning... hopefully the heaviest snow doesn't miss it to the east... some of the models are showing a sharp snow cutoff line in that area...

Well... I hate to complain, but conditions yesterday were pretty tough for this aspiring tele skier. The wind picked up in the night so I guess it really blew the snow around and resulted in a windblown packed powder that almost had a breakable crust to it. Conditions seemed to improve through the day though as a few inches continued to fall and the snow softened up (I guess the storm total was around 20"). Now don't get me wrong - the thicker powder made a great base for some awesome tree skiing - where the snow was also softer.

I'd say my favorite skiing of the weekend was actually Friday afternoon / evening when it was absolutely DUMPING! It felt like it snowed a foot by the time I left the slopes by 5 or so. Today at Canaan was also pretty nice - it was one of those picture perfect bluebird days with fresh powder, calm winds and mostly sunny skies...

I'll post some pics once I find my camera... what a weekend!

I'll add a couple pics later as well.

This weekend in the valley was awesome. I was at Canaan Valley Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. Lots of fresh snow, even on trail. Hardly anyone there. The best run by far in my opinion was Dark Side of the moon. The one next to it (Prosperity?) was also good, but a bitch to traverse out of at the bottom. (On a side note, if they'd move the tubing hill and reopen that trail to the bottom it would make the mountain a lot better.) Weiss Meadows was also with lots of untouched snow, but I couldn't seem to carry enough speed to cover the flats at the bottom of 3.

Sunday at Timeberline was sunny and felt very warm even though the thermometer read mid twenties. Awesome bumps on The Drop, Off the Wall, and Thunder Draft. Something clicked for me over ther last two weekends and I was skiing what I can only describe as "zipper lines" for the first time ever.

Most exciting part of the weekend: Watching a school bus drift the turn from Canaan Valley onto 32 right into my lane on Saturday morning.

It's just tooo good. Need some people to use this white nectar that Ullr is giving us. I found out that Va ia going to get HAMMERED again so I won't be working anytime soon and why worry? (the good part about being an educator) The beer is cold, the snow is schweet and smiles abound. I'll post again tomorrow to let all you flatlands drool. grin

The $20 afternoon ticket was a steal. Here's some pictures from Saturday.

This is what we were greeted to in the morning before shoveling our way out.

A few shots in the morning snow.

Here's where I got stuck in the snow at the bottom of Prosperity.

The valley as the storm started to lift.

And finally, a shot of yours truly on Dark Side of the Moon.
