I drove south on I-81 from Carlisle, PA to Winchester, VA this morning. The interstate in PA and VA was fine (just the usual caution needed on the snowy ramps), but I-81 in both MD and WV was a mess. Road surfaces on both were a bumpy mix of slush-covered asphalt and hardpacked icy snow. Traffic had slowed to a crawl, esp in WV where I ended up driving about 10 miles on a snowy but passable US R 11.

All in all, not surprising, in light of the storm -- 18" in Carlisle PA and 30" in Winchester (Biggest surprise was the good conditions in VA and PA). I reached Winchester at 1pm after leaving Carlisle around 10am.

Does anyone have more recent reports on road conditions on I-81 in MD and WV?

What about the roads leading to Whitetail?

Thanks,
Woody

A little dicey on Blair and in Clear Spring, but passable if you are careful. I would think tomorrow would be better.

Whitetail was great today.

I left Whitetail at 5:30 last night. Blair's valley was clear in spots, but mostly snow packed. The stretch in Clear Spring between the light and Broadfording road was real sketchy for about 100 feet, but that should be cleared up by now. If Blair's valley is not down to pavement yet, it's not a big deal.

Wojo and Rusty, thanks for the details. These were exactly the conditions my friends and I found when we drove to WT today (Tuesday, Feb. 9). Nothing at all impassible, but -- you're right -- there are a few sections of the Clear Spring-to-WT route that require extra time and attention.

BTW, I-81 and I-70 were clear all the way from the Shenandoah Valley to Clear Spring MD.

Most importantly, the skiing at Whitetail was excellent, esp. after the snow began to fall late in the morning! Travel safely everybody.
