Easy auto acess Massanutten
February 9, 2010
may make my first trip to Mass. Wed. Will be coming in from the SE. Don't know the layout, looking for wisdom gained from the frequent day trippers.
Like to have quick, easy access to auto every couple of hours, to check on my travel mate.
Prefer out of the way or less frequent traffic, preferably not after a long slog to the end of a busy parking lot or through a major social spot. A walk in the woods would be cool!
Where should i purchase ticket and park?
Any tele riders in the area, mid-week?
be safe have fun

Michael, follow signs to ski area and watch for sign for the General Store(first parking lot on left after tubing park).Park in one of the 15 min. parking spots and run down the steps on the left of the store to the lift ticket windows(they're under the General Store). Then get back to the car and continue up the mountain. The next parking lot on your left is for timeshare owners. Go to the next parking lot and drive all the way to the end near the slope and park.(If this one is full go up to the next level) There is an open area to the slope, walk along the road toward the lodge and you'll see it. Walk to the snow, put your skis/snowboad on and ski down to the lift. When you're ready to leave, ski down southern comfort to the opening and walk to your car. This is my routine when I ski there. Skied there today, conditions were great. Hope this makes sense and helps you out.
Looks like driving on Wed morning could be challenging around Charlottesville and over the mountains to Massanutten. Getting to WTG may be easier from the Richmond area if the storm tracks north as predicted. Suggest you check VA DOT status and cameras before leaving.
Tskski, That's just what I was looking for. thanks
MarzNC, WGrn would be easier, but the weather will be a bit on the wet side. Mass. appears to be snow only, figure it would be a good time to change it up a bit. TL was initial goal, had to scale back. Besides, snowed in (car camped)for 2 days on WGrn recently. Hootie Hoo!
VDOT camera's, are they helpful? where find?
Appreciate the help

VA DOT website has a lot of useful info.
http://511virginia.orgIf things are clear, taking VA15 to US33 to Elkton is the shortest way. A few miles of mountain driving near the Skyline Drive, but an extra lane on the uphill side helps. I find that I-64 to I-81 to Harrisonburg is better than I-64 to US340. Only 10 miles longer.
Have fun!
