Wisp Snow Report?
March 14, 2010
Has anyone here been to the Wisp lately? Their homepage is showing
60" in the past week while the snow report says
96" in the past 7 days!?!? Either way you put it... that's an absurd amount of snow!
I skied 4 days at Wisp last week, including two powder days and it was in great condition. I drove past Wisp last night from Valley and they seemed to have more snow piled up along the side of the roads than in the Valley. Wisp also seems to be letting people ski off trail a little more than in the past or at least I never got hassled. Conditions should be great.
...dude, drive straight past wisp to the valley, for real...there is no comparison right now...the only reason to stop in deep creek is to pick up some beers at Mchenry beverage...

I agree! That place is AWESOME!

I skied Tline on Wednesday and I thought real hard about staying to ski yesterday, but I've got to be responsible at least one day a week. Trust me I'd rather ski Tline than Wisp, but a couple of powder days at Wisp beats a week of groomers at WT.
The other reason to stop in DCL is MSBC. Nothing like an Apres ski Stout and a flat bread
The snow at Wisp this year has been just plain ridiculous. In addition to the last two big blowout snowfalls, they have received non-stop lake effect stuff nearly every day for the last two months. Wisp is now reporting over 179 inches since Thanksgiving, and have another 8 inches coming in the next 24 hours. I have a townhouse right on the "Down Under" trail, and the snow on my deck and balconies is well over 4 feet deep. (I'm very nervous about the Spring melt).
I was there for the first big snow two weekends ago and the skiing was fantastic. I think the season will extend way into April at this rate. If anyone wants to rent my place, it's got a lot of availability for the remainder of the season. Shoot me an e-mail if you're interested.
Looks like Wisp will push past the 200 inch mark this winter before the end of the week. Unbelievable.
Wisp due to get another 12-20 inches by this Saturday morning, bringing the total for the season to over 235. Looks like we're in store for a lot of April skiing this year!
Wisp got 36 inches over the last few days, 12 more inches by tonight! Looks like the roads are open again, maybe we can sneak through...
...wisp is reporting 44 inches in the last week...where do they get there snow measurements from...does anyone have a link to a measuring station at deep creek...or are these measurements taken "in-house" by wisp?....
I couldn't find any Coop Obs from the area..there is an Obs station at Frostburg & Cumberland,md. Up in PA you can get Obs at Mt Davis,Laurel Summit.
As I stated on another thread, When you get Wrap around Moisture from a storm sitting NE of Canaan The Higher Elevations of PA & MD get 1st dibs on the Snow as it travels north to south. Case in point..7springs got 10 inches yesterday with Wisp getting 6 & Canaan getting 4.
I don't trust Resort obs, especially places like Killington where there is just too much money & competition to keep them honest.
PS..today Folks skiing Canaan will be Smelling flakes from half frozen Lake Erie mixing in with the leftover NE storm moisture.
I don't know, but suspect that Wisp takes them in house. In my experience, they are conservative, though. We consistenly get more than they report at our cabine about 4 miles away on Roman Nose. Their total is also less, so far, than the official weather station in Oakland and the offical DOT total, which I think is at 258.5 inches for the winter as of yesterday.
Based on what is at our cabin, I have no doubt about the 44 inches in the last week. And, from several trips to the Valley and back, casual oberservation suggests that Garrett County has recieved more snow this year than Davis and the CV area. I suspect that 40 miles further north has made more of a difference than the 1000' greater elevation in the Valley.
Garrett College also maintains a very good weather data site with detailed daily archives. It can be found at

..I was just curious, thanks for info..that is a [censored] load of snow...I bet there are some huge cut drifts on 219 between davis and deep creek right now....
It is, indeed, a [censored] load of snow. Never thought I'd say it, but TOO much, really. One difference with CV though, which for all intents has the same amount of snow, is that Garrett has quite a few more people, with the stores, schools, roads and all that entails. At this point, even large snowblowers are being overwhelmed, the roads department, which has serious equipment, is having trouble with some of the more rural roads, and getting into driveways has become an issue. Driving a school bus has to be an uncomfortable adventure on many roads.
The single storm 54" from the 2003 GW birthday blizzard is still more than any single event this year, but the snowpack is now much deeper than it was then. As in Davis, it's been snowing pretty much continuously for all of February. And, (big surprise here), it is still snowing now, with more predicted thoughout the week. AMAZING!
Canaan Gets 50% more Snow than Wisp....At least that is the Conventional thinking..Back in the Day It was always a Given that Snowshoe got more snow than Canaan but that has been proven wrong over the years...

I agree with you, but 50% more might be pushing it. On four different occasions this year, I skied Tline and the drove past or skied at Wisp the next day and this year they seem to be keeping pace.
But on the other hand, it was always 3-4 degrees cooler in CV than DCL. And last April 8, I skied powder at Tline and by the time I drove past Wisp there wasn't much snow left.
Wisp gets tracked out much faster than Tline or CVR.
The family and I skied yesterday at Wisp and it was great. Still untracked to be found, everything else was really soft.
Agree that 50% is pushing it. I had a X-C ski guide years ago that I can't find by Roger Corbett that had a delta of close to a third though.
There is also this map (link below) that I found somehow. I think the map is wrong on the amounts but it does show the blip in CV that we all know is there.

From south to north along the western Front we see SS reporting 1 inch, canaan 1.4... Wisp cking in with 3...& 7springs..ZERO...Wisp 3?...HMMMmmmmmmmm...Snow God must love Wisp this year!..Or...
3" is quite possible, as it was snowing pretty hard when I came off the hill last night. The backroads are still snow covered and the drifts along Rt.219 are huge, especially near the scenic overlook as your nearing Keysers Ridge.
Hey Tommo - Its been a ong time since you've posted. Are you just skiing weekends or are you there during the week? Let me know and we'll get together for some turns.
Here's the report from Wisp - I've been here all weekend, and we did not get nearly as much rain as Baltimore and DC. We skied for 4 hours Saturday in a light mist, and skied from 9-3 today with no rain at all. Conditions are still excellent, the warmer temps and light rain have not diminished the conditions. Loose granular is the best description I can come up with. It is not slushy. The best part was there was no one here, we were up and down all day long, no waiting.
The base is still 4-6 feet, 10 in a few places. Nearly all slopes are open, one had to be closed because run-off created a crevice in the middle of one slope. In talking to the ski patrol and a manager there, they plan to stay open well into April.
