Does anyone have any thought on what the conditions might be like next weekend (2/27-2/28) in Canaan? I'm getting real concerned with what this rain will do to us on Monday. I see they're calling for snow showers through the week - but will it be enough to bring back powder conditions in the trees?
I guess like chaga said in the biking board... the plentiful snow this winter has spoiled me
The NWS folks are describing next weeks weather pattern as "textbook for another prolonged upslope snow event across southeast West Virginia". The quote came from the Blacksburg NWS guy who covers southeast WV but I'm sure it applies further north too.
Fear not.
Hmmm good to hear. I'll sleep a little better tonight
Im looking at TLINE next weekend as well
$18 lift tickets!

Where did you find the $18 lift tickets?
Hmmm... it looks like most of the forecast models are calling for 12"+ through Friday!
It's looking like Canaan will break the 100" mark for the month, wow!

With the potential for a really big one during the middle of next week.
Another big dump for middle of next week?!?!! That's when we'll be heading up to the valley fri-sun.
Quick question..no intention of hijacking thread...but for saturday skiing...T-line or Canaan? Curious about crowds.
thanks!
Canaan is generally much less crowded than Timberline... but neither resort is anywhere near as crowded as Snowshoe

Not sure what days you are skiing, but if it were me I'd do Tline on Fri and Sun and Canaan on Sat.
I will be disappointed if we don't see two feet by Sunday.
That's the kind of optimism I like to hear
The GFS is getting closer to agreeing with you... they're now showing up to 20":
Chris Bailey over at WSAZ also has an interesting blog post about the snows this week:
http://www.wsaz.com/blogs/chrisbaileysblog/85024337.htmlMan, it looks like parts of the NE are going to get HAMMERED from this storm!
Damage!..your on the ball Abe..I didn't even know that they had such a map available! Wunder if NWS Pitt has one to continue up thru Tucker,Co...Guess its like fishing..if your line ain't in the water you wont catch anything..I'm heading over to nws pitt to ck now..
Whew... nearly every room in the valley is booked for Saturday night! Canaan, Timberline, Canaan Village Inn and a slew of other places in the area had no vacancies. I was finally able to find a room at the "Ladybug B&B" in Thomas for the night. I'm guessing that means the slopes will be fairly crowded as well.
I'll be skiing the trees at tline both Saturday & Sunday if anyone wants to hook up for a few runs (blue teles, black helmet, gray pants, greenish jacket)... I'm gonna do all I can to catch first chair both days as well
BTW... the
Charletown NWS is now showing up to 28" by Sunday!!! It's going to be an amazing weekend!
Do what you can to make it happen
It'll be so worth it!

Ugh, I'd love to. BUT, I just had a whirlwind physiology tour over the past 2 weeks. Exactly 4 days on the ENTIRE GI system and then 4 days(finishing tomorrow) on the ENTIRE Endocrine system. Test on both is on Monday. Oh yeah, the test also includes 14 lecture hours (~60 questions) of neurobiology.
Needless to say the last thing I will be doing this weekend is enjoy plenty of pow pow. As of now, the plan is for Monday afternoon @ the Shoe...
I was just joking though man. Go out, tear it up, and have a blast!!
Ha... I figured you were joking... you should still find some pretty sweet conditions on Monday!
Did anyone ski in Canaan today... I'm just wondering how conditions were?
Looks like the valley has picked up 10" so far!
Sorry, I didn't make it to the Valley today, but I did ski Wisp.
Snowed really hard all afternoon and by 6:30pm there was at least 10" on the ground. It was snowing hard when I left. Tomorrow morning should be sweet.
Not sure about the Valley, but the snow here in Lewisburg has been coming down since about 7:30 last night. It also brought TONS of wind with it. I was about 1/3 of the way up my hill at 5:30 this morning (spinning class at 6) and got stopped by a guy in a large truck that said he refused to take it through the drifts at the top of the hill. He held his hands up and said they were about 3-4 feet deep. My little Toyota Corolla has been a tank this year, but I don't think it's ready for that.
Anyway, everyone be safe while traveling in this stuff. I can only imagine how bad it is in "dem dere mountains". Be safe! Have fun skiing!!
16 inches storm total so far With Canaan Hgts obs Guy saying that there is almost constant whiteout conditions with 10 foot drifts..stay tuned!

This is an excellent time (well all winter has been) to learn where your tow points are on your vehicles!! Not so easy searching when your car is body-hung or in a ditch in the middle of a storm. Learn where they are before that happens. Even better... also carry a good tow strap with you...very small investment that can pay off bigtime.
Hm... that's good advice chaga - I guess I'll pick up a tow strap this afternoon
Highspeed lifts at Snowshoe aren't running today...

I rode there yesterday from about 10-2. Looked to be about 50 people on the hill, conditions were 10" of fluff over a very firm base. The bumps on Gravity weren't much fun everything else was a great. It got better as the day went on as it kept
snowing. Meadows/DSOTM/Prosperity were all mostly untracked.
Never did like the North/south moisture feed scenerio for canaan that we have today but shouldn't complain about the 4 inches today to add to the 16 previous. Hard wind is not the best recipe for great powder as it can pack it down as it falls but this storm ain't over till way after Abe is done singing in the trees tomorrow!...High 20's to maybe the big 30 before its done..but when is done?..more snow chances to come but so is the end to winter so enjoy it while we got it!..i'll be up there next weekend...as soon as the roads open
Hitting the road now... Hopefully be to tline in time for first chair
Finally made it to CV yesterday afternoon. Over-the-boot deep light fluffy pow, deeper in the woods. No one there (maybe 25 people?). Occasionally contacted the very firm base under all that pow but even the Gravity bumps were full of new soft snow. Amazing conditions after dropping off the wind-polished icy top. Needed a little more tilt to the hill to get through all the pow! Definitely forgot all about the drive until 4:30 close- took an hour to get to Davis (I think a bus was stuck across the road).
..dam...then Canaan opened up and had the lifts running yesterday to...I don't know how you can stand those crowds...I'll have to get back over there one of these days, I haven't ridin' over there in years...
Dang, I wish Timberline topped out over 7,000 feet!
Tops out at 8,540' but Mr B & the Boys would hike up to the 11,245 Volcanic summit to "warm up" before the 3,690 vert drop..Slamage!

can open, worms (oops, worm) everywhere, buzzkill
Wow... what a weekend! I'll post some pics & TR tomorrow...
