Timberline - Mar. 4
March 8, 2010
Took a mental health day and drove to Canaan Valley Wednesday night. Did the usual Canaan car camp and was up early to ski at Timberline. It skied great of course and it should be an awesome weekend. Started cloudy, but ended mostly sunny. Woods were nice, soft, but mostly tracked out. I skied more in the woods then on the groomers. Does Timberline do a trail day or allow tree trimming in the fall? I did my part today, plowing over saplings and branches. This was my first time skiing Timberline when anything is skiable. I was impressed with the amount of lines available; a little trimming and pruning in some areas would go a long way, but can't complain.
I tested out my ghetto rigged chestcam. Basically, I just strapped my Canon Powershot to my backpack chest strap. Lots of footage, low on quality. If you're prone to motion sickness, don't even bother watching.
timberline trees - sorry, forgot to rotate
Scotty - when was that video shot?
Nice pictures. The video quality looks pretty good actually.
Can you tell me how "the usual car camp" thing works? Does it mean sleeping in your car? Ski area parking lot? I want to try something like that this weekend.
thanks Rod. Yeah, I just put my back seat down in the Outback and sleep in the state park campground. I only car camp when I'm doing a quick day trip; I find it easier than leaving NOVA at 5am. I like the campground because its secluded, out of the way, yet still close to the resorts.
I tried it once years ago, after skiing at Canaan, but I couldn't find the campground, all the signs were covered with snow, it was dark. I went to Timberline and helped someone get his car unstuck. In gratitude he gave me his lift ticket and I went night skiing.
Slept in the Tline parking lot that night, but I don't know if I could get away with that again. Probably against the rules.
Wow, that's pretty hardcore! I guess that's a good way to guarantee first chair though
How was the snow yesterday? Is it pretty soft in the woods still?
yep it defitely helps.
snow was great. still plenty soft in the woods, albeit the wider areas are mostly tracked out. the 2" on tuesday wasn't enough to fill in the tracks from the weekend. hope those weren't your tracks i followed into a thicket of saplings.
They just might have been
I was skiing some pretty thick lines this past weekend... I still have a scratch on my nose to prove it, ha!
cool vids scotty. too bad we didn't cross paths. i didn't see another soul in the woods.
what is your cam set-up? I haven't been able to find a universal mount so I attach my camera via the threading
I have several different ones but the vid I posted for Tline was shot using a Gopro HD with the chest mount. I posted another vid of BC action using the Gopro std on a helmet mount. Check them out on the webbernets.
Snow still nice and soft in the woods today (March 5), although it is definitely getting tracked out.
Freshies are mostly used up. There are still a few more lines I found but getting there was the problem. There will be base in the trees until mid april and beyond unless it gets real warm and rains a lot. If that happens, we'll have white water everywhere.
