Two great days of true corn skiing. Knowing the temp would be in the mid 20s on Tues. night, I drove out on Wed. AM and arrived at noon, hoping to catch it just right. The Drop had just been opened but it needed more time, a half hour or so. The bumps had no rhythm and the whales were sagging and collapsing which did not help. Off the Wall, on the other hand, was beautifully bumped and skied great. I picked some low hanging fruit in a place where Lou wouldn't go, also nice. A second sampling of a nearby place started OK but the bottom had dense leg breaking mashed potatoes. OTW was the place to be. I hit it over and over, a dozen consecutive runs, each seemingly better than the last. It's a north facing run that stayed good all afternoon, although the flat run in to the top got very slow and glue like in the sun. I have not tele'd bumps so well in a long time. 6 weeks of high altitude skiing in CA and UT followed by a week of rest had given me iron legs. I was an animal.
Met Andy from Blue Knob and a bunch of his buddies for a beer on the deck afterward. A perfect spring skiing day.
I had intended to drive home on Thurs. AM but abandoned that plan.
NOW is the time for the Valley and it won't last long. On Thurs AM I slept a little late and got to CV at about 10. The night was again cold and a patroller was turning everyone away from the Meadows. The groomers were over there and it had been slide for life territory at lift opening. On the next run he was gone and the rope was down. The sun was just beginning to cook corn in the Meadows and it was perfect for a half dozen runs. Then I left for Whitegrass.
On Sun. I leave for a couple weeks in VT and just could not go without a last climb and ski of the open slope and visit with my Whitegrass friends. I had Chaga & maple tea with Chip and took that last open slope run.
BTW there must have been 200 cars at Timberline of Wed. and 50 each at CV & WG on Thurs.
Get out there and ski! Corn season will not last long.
