Happy Easter...
Anybody out in Utah this past and next week is getting a sweet experience.
Alta has received more than two feet of fresh powder and has a near normal base for early April. Total snowfall still below 500" average, but not by much!

I wasn't planning any more trips this season, but damn, the last 10-12 days have been outstanding there, and makes me wonder "what if...".. It would have been a great time to ski at Alta. Next 3-5 days look great too.

Southwest flies into SLC and unlike other airlines you can get a good price at the last minute. This is the second year in a row that they have gotten the best storm cycle of the year in early April.

Skier219,

I was down at the beach this past weekend and the paper had some deals on Frontier Airlines out of Newport News. $200/RT to Denver and $280/RT to SLC.

Next week, I'm heading out to the NSP event at Snowbird. We should also get a day or two at Alta. I hope the storms keep coming.

It sure looks good out there for the next few days. I think I counted up 26-30" cumulative forecasted through Tuesday night. Reminds me of the April trip I took out there in 2008, which ended up being the best powder skiing of the season.

Frontier doesn't start flying out of NN until May, but it will be nice to have another travel option for next season. What's even more interesting is that they will have direct flights to Denver (which would be the connector hub if flying to SLC). That will make a CO trip quite appealing. I am real sick of dealing with connections and other hassles when flying to SLC.

Just got back from Alta. Too complicated to explain, but the short story is that Marz Jr. and I met up with an alumni group at Alta Lodge. We skied April 8-11 so missed the powder, but also missed 1.5 days of interlodge and a closed mountain. The trip was set up months ago. I hung with the adventurous types for a few runs in the morning. Then did a variety of stuff with a ski buddy who is an expert. Had fun using new skills learned at the NASTC clinic at Tahoe in March. Marz Jr. got to Level 7 in ski school. Did her first mogul runs. She liked the steep blacks when the snow was soft.

It warmed up too fast for the powder dump to be enjoyed for long. Locals were leaving by 1pm on Wed. On Thu-Sat, Supreme was the popular area until things softened up on Sugarloaf and Collins. Mostly blue skies, but had a snow shower Fri and thick clouds for a couple hours midday Sat. Sun stayed too cool in the morning. Overall, great spring skiing. Fun way to end a snowy season!

Some sidestepping required to get around the bend to see Castle Apron

Looking up from the traverse, the guys are up there

About ready to track the pow

Extrovert was good when soft

Ballroom was already pretty tracked out by Thu morning, the powder dump on Mon-Tue didn't last long because it warmed up fast on Wed - pic taken late afternoon April 10

Still great skiing in Utah!
From the Ski Utah website:

Alta Ski Area Surpasses 500-inch Mark
Proof that even a 'bad year' in Utah is spectacular, April snowstorms have delivered huge snow totals to Utah ski resorts. In fact, Alta is now reporting 510 inches of total snowfall this season. Brighton Ski Resort reported 90 inches in seven days, and Snowbird and Solitude have also reported more than seven feet so far this month. On the Wasatch Back, Park City Mountain Resort reported week-long totals more than 80 inches

The skiing at the Bird the last couple of days has been sweet. 16" of fresh on Tuesday am. LCC was closed Tuesday am, so we had the place to ourselves. Luckily, as about half the Mtn was shut down on Tuesday due to the wind. This morning they openned everything up. Powder runs under bluebird skies, doesn't get much better than this. I'll post some pictures later, time to hit the hot tub.
