Over on the SJ forum, there are often references to "lost" sections of open ski areas. Most often mentioned is the "Sunrise" pod at Killington. I was thinking that we didn't have slopes or pods being abandoned down here, but then I remembered the Hawthorne slopes at Snowshoe and the slope(s) that were skiers left at Carnita/Ski Liberty. Can anyone think of any other slopes or pods that were abandoned, as opposed to repurposed?

Cherry Bowl at Tline...at least it used to be on the official trail map, now it is more "opportunistic".

GGNagy, Liberty had two if I recall right one on the front and one on the back?

For sure Hawthorne--both slopes and lift.

Also was there not a Cupp Cake on the west side at the Shoe?

Wisp had a slope "chipmunk" I think over by the golf course that it sorta still there. Also there was a slope under the flat lift from Main Street back to the summit. Rabbit Run or something like that---have to see an old trail map.

Was there something planned to the west at Roundtop that never made it? There appears to be a trail on Google Earth.

old maps? Here ya go! http://www.skimap.org/SkiAreas/view/445

Wisp:
Looks like there were originally a few slopes/trails under chair 1 where the mountain coaster is now.

Snowshoe:
Cupp Cake and Mephisto #2(?) appear to be where Shay's revenge is today, so the terrain was mostly reused.

Timberline:
Cherry Bowl was indeed once on the map, but is no longer.

Dunno about the liberty backside, or Roundtop slope.

Never knew about the lift 1 runs, thanks for the link.

On the Liberty run, go to Google Earth, View, Historical Imagery and look at the 1994 shot. I think you'll classify it as a reuse because it is now the tubing hill and the parking lot.

Gets tracked out quicker than OTW on a pow day. Main lines at least. Usually more crowded. whistle

Laurel freaking Mountain. More lost terrain than the rest of the Mid-A combined. I know the thread title is "Lost parts of open areas", but geez, if Captain Obvious lands from the sky and hits your house ...

Yea there's a reason i didn't see anyone in there, what a bushwack. How about under the six pack at Sevensprings from the top? Does that qualify as lost?

Also there is aski area here in wheeling that use to have 2runs but now only has one and a1/2 runs(it is a very small area only about 100-200 vertical). So I was wondering would that count as aghost run? OK one more Question does any body know what the purpose of the above ground pvc pipes with sprinkler heads on them runing through the woods by the golf course at Hdden Valley is? The funy thing is the pipes are caped off about 100 feet before they would reach the golf course and there is about 15-25 of them spaced about 10-20ft. from each other. Any ideas? confused

The sprinkler pipes you are referring to are a how they dispose of treated sewage. This process is know as "spray irrigation". You would not want to be in the area when they are turned on...serious yellow snow. Buncher built a new sewage pump station along Route 31 which will eventually accept HV poopy and pump it to the a sewage treatment plant to the east (not sure where it is). The sewage lagoons adjacent to the clay tennis courts and the new Norht Summit condos (nothing like a water view) will eventually dissappear, I assume.

Sounds like Olgebay Park. Its been a few years since I have been there, but my recollection is that there is still some remnants of the old surface lift standing. Were there really two distinct ways down the hill, or just 2 "names" for the broad clearing of the old driving range/par3 course?

GG, I have seen the "current" ski operation: slope, lodge, lift etc. I also know that there was skiing at Olegbay in the past and they suspended operations for many years. Were operations conducted in the same area or is the "current" location a new one? It looks from Google imagery that in 2004 there was no lift in place, but it is there in the 2007 and 2009 shots. Just trying to determine is this a re-opening or a new area with a lost one somewhere else on the property. I think they still use it as a driving range in the summer.

Yes.

This is a re-opening. They used to have three surface lifts and ground guns. Now the have the one triple and a pretty good snowmaking system. Many years ago, back in the fifties, I believe they skied on the crispin golf course from the road to Wilson Lodge above #3 fairway down to the pine room. Don't think there was ever a lift there. Believe it or not they are using municipal water for snowmaking. I spent a powder night there last year. Oglebay, Shred teh gnar!

OK, this makes sense. My in-laws spent time at Ogelbay over the years and when I showed them the ski area last time we went by they swore that was not the original hill, but they did not remember where the original area was located. Since they are hayseeds and don't know their (expletive deleted) from a ski hill, I did not trust their memory.

Hey thanks the only thing is the sewage treatnent plant is at the entrance of the the North summit parking which is in the valley and the pipes are @ the top of the mountain the resivoir is owned by the water company. Also buncher doesnt own the water and sewage company Kettler does (old owner of Hidden Valley resort). But there is talk about Buncher buying the sewage company. You are right though the water pipes come frome the direction of the resivoir. On another topic you are right Jimmy. I believe they use to have 3 lifts. Now they have a triple lift and some times they have a handle tow open. the one abandoned run is where the par3 golf course is (on skiers left). the bottom lift house and lift poles are still there but no longer used and ran up to where the snow making resivoir is.

I've wondered why they didn't install the new lift here; would've added a bit of verticle that area on the par three is really interesting terrain wise.

They probably cant afford 2 have the extra terain. also the mony donated 2 reopen the area was limited so they couldnt afford a longer lift.
