I was in a triathlon two weeks ago crashed on the bike (after leading the swim) and broke my neck (c7) in two places. No fun. I had surgery a week ago (c7-t1 fusion). Now in a collar and waiting on my neck to heal.

I figure that kind of shoots my ski season. Still holding out hope for Colorado in April but that may be a pipe dream.

My doc says I should be fully recovered in 6-9 months. Any one has any history with this type of injury??????

I have no experience with your type of injury, but don't give up hope.

I was snowboarding on November 11, 1993, fell, and absolutely destroyed my left wrist. There was no joint left. The doctor told me that the earliest I could ski/board was April. The external fixation came off on December 23. I did lots of PT.

Starting about the second week of January, I started asking the Doctor if I could get out on snow. He said "wait til April." I had to ask him 3-4 times a week. He kept saying "wait til April." Finally on January 23 I asked him again, and he said "oh, all right, just don't fall on it!"

Went out to Roundtop that night and did fine. The rest of the season was fine, too.

So the moral of the story is "if you think that you're doing fine, start bugging your doctor!"

Good luck!

Holy cow! Very sorry to hear this. Thank goodness you're expected to make a full recovery. Don't have relevant history/advice...just work hard with your medical team and stay optimistic. You have a beautiful family and lot to live for.

You will be having followup Xrays and scans, yes?

When is your next one?

Honestly, CO in April sounds...pushing it by a lot.

Driving your car over our potholed roads is likely to be a decent first indicator of how much progress you've made, other than the Xrays/MRIs.

The last thing you need is a nerve problem propagating down as pain, tingling or numbness in the shoulders/arms.

(Fair disclosure: only have 2ndhand experience with SO's C6/C7)

I don't have any experience with this type of injury but just want to wish you well in your recovery.

There will be good days and bad, but stay positive. It sounds like (but I'm no doctor) it could have been even worse given the type of injury you are dealing with -- i.e. paralysis. So stay positive and don't jeopardize your long term recovery b/c you are jonesing mid-winter...

Best of luck. smile

The only ref I can give you is a broken Surgical Neck of my humerous, and it pretty much came apart.
Doctors told me the same thing: April (as in no more snow) but I believe they had a very good reason.
If I fell on it and broke it again, things would have been horrible for me. I think that's their whole point.
Well, two weeks after the break, I was skiing with it strapped in 5 different places. I looked terrified, and I was - so as you would have it, I fell (like 3 times on it).
Lucky (VERY LUCKY) I didn't break it again.
My only advice is to have fun and take your own responsibilities. The doctors will try to protect you, but even then, they cannot be blamed.
Comes april, you could take the worst fall down stairs - doctors aren't ready for that - and thus again cannot be blamed.
Feeling lucky, wanting to have fun?
Go for it... be ready for the worst as it could happen.
There is one really good thing about excercising again: increases blood flow, increases healing time. Just take it EASY and wear that brace of yours. Best of recovery to you!

Zyio, yes it is good that you have'nt similar injury.

And yes it is terribly to break your neck.

Do they have snow, or even snowmaking, in Nigeria?

No thanks on clicking the medical persuasive essay link.
