For you Pittsburgh folks and all baseball fans who want to relive the glory days, this is a pretty neat story about the discovery of a complete copy of the televised coverage of the Pirate's 7th game victory in the 1960 World Series.

Thanks for the post Jim. This is big news here in the Burgh especially after Pitt got hammered by Miami.

After what is it, 16 years of losing baseball in this once proud baseball town it is no wonder we look fondly at this best World Series game ever played and that dramatic bottom of the ninth, seventh game home run by one of sports truly great and genuinely humble stars. No player today would qualify to carry Maz's jock strap, IMHO.

That home run has been voted as Pittsburgh's greatest moment in sports by the fans here, yes even surpassing any one of the Steelers Super Bowl plays.

Here's to Bill Mazeroski, the best second baseman to ever play the game.

Yeah Maz. Born in Wheeling WV, played for the same team his whole career, held several fielding records for over 30 years. Not many can make those claims. Maz is one of the great ones.

Rob I went to the Pitt game, nice stadium, first trip to Heinz field. Had ticket to the baseball game last night but couldn't go, guess I missed the Succos hitting the Century Mark.

I grew up a Pirates fan. Maz's homerun was before my time, but one of the all-time classic baseball moments. Weird series since the Yankees outscored the Bucs by a major margin, but still lost the series.

Need to make it out to the new ballpark (attended a couple of games at Three Rivers during the 70's.)

Rogers Hornsby, Jackie Robinson, Ryne Sandberg, Joe Morgan. For starters. I think the later 3 may even have been better fielders than Maz.

Yo ho!!! Beat em Bucs! As a kid I remember one of the teachers at school having a new-fangled portable TV and while waiting for the bus at school, Maz hit the shot heard 'round the world. Everyone was yelling, screaming, dancing, jumping up and down as the Bucs beat them evil Yankees. There was never another place like old Forbes Field. Saw Stargell put one over the right field grandstand and Clemente throw out a runner from deep Right Center on one bounce... That was a far piece.... Saw a twilight double dipper where Veal and Law pitched against Kofax and Drysdale.... Even had a science teacher and junior high basketball coach (Bruce DalCanton) who pitched for the Bucs and when we went to games would get us to come down to the field and we met a lot of the players. We had green weenies and "the gunner." I could go on forever.... Miss that proud heritage. I lost a lot of respect for professional sports with free agency and strikes/lockouts. They've become a bunch of greedy b*%#@$!

I loved that World Series, that final game and that home run. Of course I'm a Red Sox fan. smile

I guess I'll use this thread for off topic sports stories.
Anyone else remember NFL legend George Blanda, oldest guy to ever play in the NFL?
obit
He was from Youngwood, another great QB from western PA.

They never played for the Pirates so they're automatically disqualified. grin

JimK, I remember watching Blanda place kick for the Raiders. I watched a game when he went in for the Snake at QB. I can't remember if Stabler was hurt or if Blanda went in to mop up.
