Extreme rainfall for eastern North Carolina
In North Carolina, the the precursor moisture from Nicole has generated an epic rainfall event. Wilmington, NC has measured 15.83 inches of rain over the past three days, as of 4pm EDT. This is the city's second highest 3-day total in history, behind the 19.06" that fell in September 1999 during Hurricane Floyd. The non-tropical low pressure system developing along the South Carolina/North Carolina coast today will move northwards, giving North and South Carolina an additional blast of heavy rain tonight, which will be followed by more heavy rain from Nicole (or Nicole's remains) Thursday morning. By the time the rains from Nicole finally clear the area Thursday afternoon, an extra 5 - 10 inches will have fallen, and Wilmington will be looking at a 4-day rainfall total of 20 - 25 inches, the highest in recorded history there. Severe and damaging flooding is likely today and tomorrow from the record rains. Fortunately, eastern North Carolina was under moderate drought conditions prior to this week's rainfall onslaught, so the flooding damage will not be as great as the billions of dollars of damage wrought by Hurricane Floyd

10.5 inches of rain in one day 2 days ago & it hasn't stopped yet...I'm thinking if this was snow we would be talkin a 250 inch dump for the DC area & maybe 650 inches for the Utah high spots. INCREDIBLE...I had just moved to the Carolinas back in 99 & ran into the alltime record Blizzard of 24 inches in 24 hours up in Raleigh,nc & then the following Summer we had the 500 year flood with Floyd!...if you want weather extremes..MOVE TO NC!!

* at 627 PM EDT... radar and weather spotters indicated torrential
rain continued to fall across the entire Cape Fear region.
Rainfall rates up to one inch per hour will continue to produce
severe flooding. Multiple streets and highways are closed and
flooding is expected to continue and worsen.

1 inch per hour Rain?...Fo-get-about-it...

Truth. Brief stoppage here in Durham, but the rain to the east has been epic. Reports are that some areas will exceed Floyd totals. Heavy rain and winds expected today. We got 10+" in one night from Fran, but this is going on for days. Hang on Andy.

It's been a drought buster for sure. This time last week we set a record of 99 F in Virginia and the ground was so parched it resembled New England boilerplate. We have had copious amounts of rain since Monday and more to come. We have begun our second mud season. Maybe this winter will be another to remember (we hope).

Mother Natures way off releasing all the excess heat built up in the Sea surface temps down in the Caribean...we are up to 23 inches with maybe another inch to go & we have beat out Hurricane Floyds 19.6 inches which was supposed to be a once in 500 year event...Maybe the term was a once in every 500 year Flood which was helped by a Tropical system that had dumped 5 inches the week before. We were parched before this system came along like Kwill mentioned which helped keep the flooding down below Floyds devastating Impact.

It has been real warm also with all the heat being transported up from the tropics, but when the system passes we will skip right to fall with temps in the low 70's all next week..SWEET!

23 inches of rain. Un-effing-believable. Andy, hope you can tread water without get tired...

But at least near DC, this storm busted the drought. I think National Airport (10 mi or so from me) was down around 7 inches of precip this year. (Dulles and BWI were near normal.)

I'll be planting some grass (along with harvesting some mushrooms) this weekend. Even with watering, the ground was VT boilerplate last weekend as K-Will said.

What is this storm doing to WV and western MD? I know those sections were in a severe drought, which might have impacted ski area snow-making supplies. Any info? Summer and fall rain = winter man-made snow.

A bit o/t I suppose, but I'd love to learn about the mushroom harvesting. My new in-laws were just here from the Czech Republic, and were amazed that we don't do that much here. I'd love to be able to add that skill to my portfolio...

I won't comment about my college daze, but it was a remark about the mushrooms growing in my lawn after 6 inches of rain in one week. (Sure nuff, mowed over several yesterday.) Sorry to disappoint, I'm not that cultured. Jimmy and K-Will will confirm that.

But being 100 percent Polski, my family (especially my departed Baci) has gotten some incredible dried mushrooms from the old country. Don't know much about picking em, but they go great in soup.

the shrooms are poping up everywhere. In the fall it the usual, but I prefer the morrels in the spring.... merinate in a white wine sauce then lightly sautee.... Amazingly yummy!
