Catalochee opening
November 6, 2010
this saturday according to their web-site. A little too far or me, but maybe we'll get lucky and someone closer will do something.
sweet! good for them... perfect weather this weekend to make snow, im sure they will actually have a solid base by the weekend. If T-Line wanted to do the same it would so so EASY... except they dont have the guts to make the effort/investment (heavy snowmaking/advertising they are open in DC media/coordinating with media to do a live broadcast of opening day or run some story on their effort to open)
loooong way even for me.
Cat has a big local skier population between asheville and knoxville, and a huge weekly contingent from atlanta. They know people will show up if they have only two slopes. They have also invested in snowmaking like crazy. I don't think tline has the same situation, do they? I might rather they try to achieve some semblance of profitability.
Yeah I don't think it's guts T-Line lacks, but rather the water supply to be able to afford to make and loose snow. As far as advertising in DC for such a thing, wouldn't be needed. Word of mouth and the web-site would provide plenty of skiers. Someone like Wisp should make a play though.

haha very true... and actually correct about Wisp, opening up squirrel cage by focusing guns from both sides and supplementing a bit from movable guns they would take much time at all to open (maybe 3-4 nights of blowing??)
Talked to the Wisp and it will be a no go on a early opening. I really don't understand why someone closer doesn't try. In twenty years of riding I've never seen a local resort open more than a few days early. I understand they may not be staffed and what not, but how about better planning for it. It really just makes no sense to me that a business that only has limited days of revenue would not try and make more open for business days.
AGREED! They have had a very solid 40 hrs+ of snowmaking opportunities within the last week and they will likely struggle to hit freezing from friday-sunday. An early opening would really not be too difficult and would provide ample publicity. Also, it would exponentially increase their chances of being open for the entire thanksgiving holiday and likely provide a boost for thanksgiving bookings!
Just to clarify I wasn't pointing the finger at the Wisp. There are a lot of resorts in the Mid-Atlantic.
Very true... but would be fun if there were 2 that did it on a yearly basis like A Basin and Loveland or Sunday River and Killington... would be fun to watch and discuss
Until recently, CV and the shoe were always open for Thanksgiving. Seems that they just don't have the desire to get things really going until mid December any more. Maybe I'm just getting old but I really don't have the desire to put the boards on until there is adequate terrain available to make the trip worthwhile.
