and snowing like heck right now. Breck already has 22 runs open and it's only been open 5 days, and with the way the snow is falling, I expect lots more by next week. The first black terrain to be open on the continent is now open at Breck.

It might actually turn out to bbe a pretty good season!

It makes me look really forward to the first day of my season -- Monday November 22!

What I didn't realize when I posted the original item, is that double diamond hike to bowl terrain on Peak 8 is open. That's never happened this early before - at least that I'm aware of.

My Colorado Pass and I are itchin to get goin'

Good for them. It's also snowing today, tomorrow and thursday at Thule AFB in Greenland. WTF does this have to do with those of us HERE in DC who need cold weather in VT or NY NOW. (And please do not hit me with any of that WV propaganda. I've skied WV, which is why I drive to VT.)

If I lived within eight hours driving time to Breckenridge or any other resort in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, British Columbia or Alberta, I wouldn't be posting on DC Ski. If lived within a two hour drive of any of the WV resorts, I would gladly ski more at any of them.

However, once I start thinking about putting in more than three hours of seat time in a drive, that changes the whole equation for me. If your car can make it to Breckenridge in three hours from Canaan Valley, then your point is well taken.

However, my Gulfstream IV is in the shop, so Breckenridge is pretty irrelevant to me right now. Of course, I could fly commercial (I'll just tell my family, significant other, boss etc. that regardless of Thanksgiving and a killing workload, Otto's going to spend mucho dinero on a last minute flight to Colorado).

As far as skiing north of the Mason-Dixon, I am kind of perverse. I don't mind cold until the wind chill goes deep into the negative numbers. Don't mind ice as long as there is somewhere to make a turn. I once asked a buddy in college why he slept with ugly girls. His response: "Anybody can sleep with a pretty girl." So I don't mind skiing in less than ideal conditions. After all, anybody can have fun skiing on a bluebird 35 degree day on fresh snow.

This is DC ski. It is not WV ski, Colo ski or New Zealand ski. We can all be excited that Jackson Hole and Crystal Mountain (Washington State) are getting dumped on and people will be skiing in Colorado soon. But it isn't that relevant to peeps like me who NEED TO GO SKIING NOW but, due to time and circumstances, are limited in the near future to whatever whims the northeastern US weather throws at us.

Yes, I am excited that the ski season is beginning the northern hemisphere, but I am a DC skier and what is relevant to me is what counts.

no, it's not irrelevant. I like skiing anywhere east, west, north, or south. I like to see what places are getting good snow and then have off-track discussions about their relative merits.

so please, continue with the ski talk.

in other news, I am now drinking winter beer. I will tune my skis this weekend. I am not grumpy :-)

oh, and speaking of Crystal Mtn, here's a picture from there last year. I really liked it.

Yeah, I have to agree with the both of you. It is sweet to hear about good conditions out west (looking at a Park City, UT trip myself later this winter, and possible even Jackson Hole), but at the same time, it is not doing me a bit of good right now. The way things are looking now, I may end up skiing that snowflex thing over at Liberty University instead.

BTW, if we want to post pretty picture of snow covered mountains (although that did look like some sweet skiing there), here is one of me skiing some fresh pow at Kirkwood this past winter while it was getting dumped on (and how I found out first hand why they call it "Sierra Cement" crazy :

Thanks for posting the Ski Pics steve..I love all Ski pics & Snow reports no matter where they are taken from. DC skiers are international (I might go back to the mother land & ski Norway someday)

Otto is just Grumpy & will mellow out when he sees the Snow on the radar which will be coming to a resort closer to him Soon...I can Smell it can you all?

In response to your WV Dig Otto...I always say...New england is too friggin COLD....Colorado is too friggin High (oxygen Starved)..but West Virginia is just Right!...& Definitely can get much better!......Oh..By the way...its snowing in WV this morn!...

Snow is where you find it. Terrain on the other hand - - - . I like both. I ski here because I live here. If I lived near a major western area I'd make an occasional trip east for Mt. Washington and perhaps for northern VT. If I came to WV it would be to see friends like Chip and catch the vibe, rather than for the skiing.

As for Sierra cement, I love the stuff. It holds you up on the steeps, rather than disappearing in a poof like mid continent snow, and hangs around a lot longer in the spring. I'm a bad snow lover anyway or perhaps just an all snow lover.

I have a friend who lives in Summit County and her Facebook post was all about getting 5" of fresh untracked powder when she was downloading from the mountain after work. It was like nails on a chalkboard man, I just couldn't take it.

On the downside for me I'm flying out to London on T/giving, then home to the auld sod for a few days. I'm hoping something local is open by the week after T/giving. I fly back in on Saturday, I want to ride Sunday. Boards are over at Willi's getting a little TLC. I'm about ready to kill a man for some snow action.

In response to Denis...there is plenty of terrain in WV...just not skiable yet....

A Yankee is an arrogant..elitist..Know it all..uppity..holier than thou..Snobby..you know...a whole different class(in their minds) of people even today coming up on 2011
we see it in their attitudes & politics as they migrate south down here..

OK..just a few of them..but enough of them to keep the prejudice alive & well!....Home biscuits are much Cooler..

I like New Englanders particularly "upcountry" New Englanders; i.e. NH, ME, VT. I like their pragmatism, good sense and droll humor*. I like town meeting as a form of government, the only form of pure democracy left in this world. Mind you I am not criticizing any other part of the country but I grew up there and I like these things.

* Example, A flatlander, lost in VT, stops and gets directions from a farmer at the side of the road. He is unsure whether the farmer really knows, so his final question is, "Have you lived here all your life?" The reply; "Not yet."

When are we going to have that beer Fish?

Ha Otto I feel it too currently not enough local supply to take care of our demand? (I've driven to VT, which is why I ski WV) How long does it take to get to K from DC?
