Pretty much the exact same thing as we saw earlier this week. Actually is a perfect situation:
1) Bit of Rain sat night
2) Quick cool down and changeover to snow
3) 1.5-3 feet of new snow for the highlands
Perfect combination with the snow on the ground right now. The rain will simply wet down what we have and then flash freeze when the temp plummets to make for a fantastic base for next week's snow.
--But i would definitely NOT do any driving next week in the highlands, whiteouts and wind chills -10 and below will be common
I agree that this will be the perfect situation to creat a base that'll last until a good thaw or until spring, whichever is first. I've been waiting for a bomber base for years an now
YES! If we continue to get lake effect upsloping through the end of December, the skiing will rival what we had last February.
When is this snow coming in? I'm heading up tonight but I was hoping for some freshies Sunday...

At exactley 12:28.36 sec on sun aft at 3500' above whitegrass shack which is between TL & CV...adjust your times acordingly
Oh man.. a winter storm watch has been issued for CV. I'm shooting to be at tline for some freshies on Monday
Why I call them the West Virginia Alpps 101...
I've been calling the WV Mtn's "The Alpps" ever since I started posting on DC SKI many Moons ago.
Ist of all the Min Requirement for "Alps" is an Alpine envirement.
Alpine=..All Pine..Areas up in elevation where it is cold enough & Snowy enough to have Spruce/Firs grow wild...3200 to 3800' in WV...
WV Mtn's are called the APPalachians.....
Blend alpine & Alps & Appalacians & you get "The WV Alpps"
What the frick are Highlands??...someplace in Scotland?..
Its the Alpps!!..Long live the WV Alpps!!..& bring on Almost heaven..
Things looking great, I agree I like the Alpps better. Anyways I'll be at the lift 9am Monday morning, red plaid jacket. Hopefullt do some hiking that afternoon.
What's the good word over in the valley? The dolly sods webcam shows some flakes coming down. Hopefully there wasn't much rain that came with the storm...
I'm hoping to be at tline @ 9 also - blue jacket and tele skis. Maybe I'll cya there Bruce!
Left Snowshoe this morning at 0930 after about 6" of fresh snow. It was hell getting out of there. Snow forecasted non-stop to Tuesday. Still, once I went past Circleville, at 2400 or so elevation, there was solid rain. Hope Canaan gets its due snow...
We left SS about 10:15 and I agree it was really bad. We saw several cars in the ditch and a couple others spinning out and couldn't get thru Rt66. Drive carefull!
If you made it onto Snowshoe property, you had half a chance of making it up this morning as SS cindered (though it was covered up again quickly)...but the climb up from Cass was a different story. Cars simply were not making it up. Passed a guy in a 4x4 pickup w/towrope pulling someone up. Now, what's the worse that'll happen if you can't climb up? But then again, what's the worse that'll happen if you can't stop on the way down!?!?!? I kept it in low, easy on the brakes, and slow it down on the straighaway approaching the hairpins! Bet if you were krazy enough to wait til this afternoon to leave - there were a few "pinball wizards" on the guardrails.
No matter how many millions Intrawest put into the top of the mountain (LOL and that's a story that has reached its finale), you'll always have that dangerous drive up (and DOWN)!
Hmm... if anyone from the CV area is up before 7 tomorrow I'd love to hear a first hand report on how much snow you pick up through the night
I'm trying to decide if it'll be worth the drive over there tomorrow...
Thanks!
Not sure about CV, But in Buckhannon, we had about 2 inches this morning. Im about 45 mins away from CV. Id say they have a good 5+ by now.
We have only recieved three inches in the past 24 hours. Abe I won't be out till 10:30 or so. Woke up with a sore throat.
Well, I decided to bail on my trip to CV today. Hopefully I don't regret it, but I figured I'd save my precious vaca day for a better powder day
Probably best Abe. So far we look like the red headed stepchild this week. Only three inches so far.
Yet Snowshoe is getting another 18". I left just before it hit on Sunday. Cars were not making it up from Cass. Western Terr. is opening too.
Just made a run down White Lightning, top was wind blown and hard. Bottom was nice. Extremely cold!!!

Wise move. I skied two runs this AM then bailed for a half day of work back in DC. Hindsight being 20/20, I shudda left last night.
Overnight, maybe 3 inches of snow fell and about 0.5 inches stayed on the trails. (Not enough base yet for any serious tree skiing.) I think the Valley will be on the very low end of the NOAA accumulations, if that, for today and tonight.
As Bruce said: cold, windy and sufficient spray on the lifts from snowmaking guns to make the lift ride up even more miserable than normal. Frostbite weather. Plus, snowmaking on all of OTW, so my goggles were seriously coated on only one run down, even sticking to the right hand side. Surprisingly, base wasn't too choppy on OTW since T-Line got a bit of rain on Saturday PM and it was well above freezing most of Sunday. WL wasn't bad, but I expected it to be a bit better given some new snow.
Plenty of guns were on today, so the good news is that T-Line is paying down it's snowmaking "Technical Debt."
Also on the plus side, outstanding soft snow on OTW on Sunday afternoon. Whales were a blast.
When r u flatlanders gonna learn? 4 sno cunry u need a 68 international 4x4 n' winches on both ends and a case of PBR in the back chilin. its gotta have welded channel beam bumpers and a cow catcher on the front to ward off bambi's mom. otherwize u juz bounse off da g-rais if ther r any... den u hav to uz da winch and m-ty sum PBR 2 mak ur lode liter.

Answering my own prediction, Dave Lester is only reporting 3 inches this AM (Monday, Monday night.) Though with the very strong winds, the snow that did fall will be piled in deep drifts.
The WV Alpss underperformed on this one. Sorry mr fish.

Though facetious, that is LOL. You do have to consider, the vast majority of SS customers come from the South. I once had a FL family in a MiniVan stuck IN THE PARKING LOT want me (4x4) pull them out. I refused. I told them it was just plain too dangerous for them to even make it to Marlinton in a blizzard...to stay over. "Oh we HAVE to go, I have to get back to work...". Funny he never said "Oh, my wife and kids might actually be safer if we wait a day". You read about all the wrecked car just this last Sunday!
that post was meant tounge n' cheek, but in all seriousness... back in the day before the bumper rails on Cass and with only a 10'stip of pavement that road swallowed quiet a few flatlanders who were stupid enough to take it. We used to get amused watching the folks in their new suvs use the g-rails as a way of slowing down or stopping. Had a house-mate from Va Beach who worked ski skool with me do that all the time when Cass was white. Some folks should just stay home.

Cass Scenic RR Company should start running one of the Shay's during the winter. Folks could pay to park their car and ride the train to the top. Then Snowshoe could charge to pick them up in a Snowcat and take them to the resort. Sounds like a plan to me. What do ya say?
On a positive note Kasey Kahne the nascar driver did help pull on of my employees out of a ditch in a newer version of the above described vehicle back when I worked there.
Wow! We have got a TON of snow since sometime after midnight last night. We've got at least 7-8" so far and it is still just pounding down. Not sure how much is coming, but I'm hoping to make the trek to Harrison County tomorrow morning after a final.
Its bad up this way. Wrecks everywhere.
Im in clarksburg right now. They arent running busses. Making parents pick up kids from school. I79 is shut down around weston. They are letting 1 car at a time through to go up the hill and over the curve bridge.
