Since the mountain is committed to natural snow skiing it has taken a while to get open. A few days ago we were fortunate to get about 8" of fairly dense snow that stuck. Since then cold dry air has dried it out leaving light sneaky fast powder. I am here visiting my daughter and family for Christmas. She was doing last minute shopping while son-in-law, 3 grandsons and I went skiing. I quickly decided that the better part of valor was to let the 3 youthful bundles of pure energy go and ski at my own pace. Do not feel bad for my daughter. She is instructing there and will be on duty every day from Dec. 26 - Jan. 2. People are always saying that Mad River is great if the snow is good. Well, 90% of the time when I go there it is great and today was one of them. Half a dozen runs had deep untracked or lightly tracked powder over their full length. Flat light made them all a challenge; you couldn't see the clumps, drifts, and occasional icy spots. I got 5 runs before my legs were trashed. The others got 7. That is about the norm. No other place takes it out of me like Mad River. I can do 10 runs at Alta or Mammoth and 20 at Timberline easier than 5 at Mad River.
