Tree runs now featured on new snow report
January 15, 2011
Oh, that is excellent. But I don't see the Cherry Bowl marked as open - I guess no one is skiing it, right?
What's this Cheery Bowl you're talking about?
Didn't lok like there's been TOO much traffic there, yet.

You're right. They must be saving the goods for themselves.
One of the rules of tree skiing: "People follow tracks." Whether or not they should or shouldn't. Some of the entrances in high-traffic areas are pretty visible.
I am working on getting names to couple of these tree runs. You'd be amazed at how good they STILL were today.
Cherry Bowl is on the map - without its name. You'd have to click on SHOW ME NATURAL SNOW.
There are 3 MORE that I'd like to add - they require a little more snow than most tree runs - so we'll have to work on that in the summer.
Since TLine cannot do this on its own, I recommend contacting the bike shop in the summer and donate a bit of your time amongst camaraderie.
Good idea about the names. Why not ask those of us who enjoy the virtues of off piste? We may come up with some er... quite original lables.

I like your labeling of Silver Streak under the Silver Queen chair as "Hollywood."
There has to be at least one "Doc's Revenge." And a "Squallywood." And a "Patrollers Paradise." And a "Loppers Lane."
And a "T-Slime." Maybe for a line near the drainage under the main chair.
Plus several other names that wouldn't make it past DCSki's censoring software.
I think the name "powder day" would be appropriate for one... Jimmy would concur.
I always thought one of the cool things of learning to ski trees was poking around, looking for stashes, not always following someone else's tracks into the trees, exploring. While I know none of this stuff is secret or impossible to find if someone has the ability and wants to find it I really think that naming it, putting it on the map like it's some kind of blue groomer serves no good purpose. Cherry Bowl Glades used to be on the map and is no big secret but OD or that shot we skied last Saturday should be left out of this. Good tree skiers don't need a trail map to find good trees to ski.
Just sayin
Take a good note on the map, because tomorrow morning, two trails will disapear. After all, we want to encourage the general public to enjoy our gorgeous Forest Service, and take pride in it... not necessarily with skis or bikes.
Don't ask which... "gag order" in effect (nothing bad, so don't worry)
Excellent Names guys... first I have to clear couple of things with patrol... then we have to come up with names... then we will implement.
Lucky charm, money, aspirin tablets... anyone? ANYONE?
Sonny bono
stairway from/to heaven
Bushwack
country road
Logjam
wood Knot..as in..'would not' try if not expert cuz your head might look like the Knot in the tree
Could go on forever..
Couple of reasons come to mind for naming at least some tree lines:
1- safety (joe's stuck on Sonny Bono and needs help)
2- we need 30 volunteers to clean up Sonny Bono
3- stay off Sunny Bono - 'cause the boulder grew overnight and must be removed
Couple of reasons I can think of for showing them as open or closed:
1- see #3 above
2- not enough coverage
3- icy, so don't be stupid!
4- working on trails (so as not to run someone over)
I think I will push for Sonny Bono (between thunder draft and WL - just for a name!
I agree with you Vic. There are times I have jumped in and wished I hadn't. Usually due to snow conditions. It may look good but ski like concrete. If no runs are named, then perhaps a general off piste snow report for those of us who would understand and not risk it. That could be very helpful. For those whpo don't understand, it wouldn't matter or change their risky behavior (boy scouts). Sorta like last year, a couple of us were doing a clinic on Sally and witnessed several of those previously referenced venture behind the cross... about 5/10 minutes later they were seen crawling out of the brush back onto the trail.
The glades ski well STILL - no ice yet!
You'll encounter couple of "hidden treasure" only because a lot of people have enjoyed them thoroughly. You may actually be surprised how much powder lines are still untouched at Tline and Canaan Valley Resort.
If you are reading this, it's too late
Aw, gee, dag nab it! all you pow-pow pigs are eating up the goods and I have to work! Can't you have some mercy for us working stiffs and save us a few lines?
So the forest service owns a huge section just East of the Cherry Bowl trail on Timberline (that would be skier's right of Cherry Bowl). As you noticed, I removed it from the map (natural snow) so please be sensitive and STAY OUT of there.
If you are unsure of its location, ask a local to take you to Cherry Bowl one day... there is a somewhat obvious tree line that will tell you: Forest Service is still here.
Good news:
Well, there are other "treasures" at Timberline, like its Western Territory. Seems that the management might be interested in opening that up a little MORE. As of right now, you'd be surprised at how well it skis... but WAIT!
If you are going to ski these, you'd best wait for the 3 to 7 inches we are about to get today / tomorrow.
Monday sounds perfect to me - at lest I am hoping for blue skies then.
