Where on MLK - Timberline, Snowshoe or Whitetail?
January 16, 2011
I have the chance to go to all three places. The drive is anywhere from 3-6 hours due to living in South MD. I have twins (age 8) who just learned to ski and am not sure which resort would be best for them on such a busy weekend. Any advice is appreciate. Thank you.
Several questions first. Will they be in lessons anytime over the weekend? Are you looking at just a day trip or overnight?
What kind of experience are you desiring?
Now for the skinny as I know it from experience. Anybody else out there please chime in.
1. Do not do the shoe on this weekend. The place is always a zoo on holiday weekends and the experience will be less than optimum. Everything from parking to slopes to eateries will be crowded. Lodging may be difficult to find as well.
2. Whitetail will be very busy as well due to it's proximity to Balt and DC. They do have good terrain for beginners but crowds in other areas may detract from the experience and you will need to find a room somewhere if staying over.
3. T-line/CV will be crowded as well but with two ski areas so close, you shouldn't have the crowding issues on the slopes. Ski CV on Saturday and t-line on Sunday. T-line's ski school is excellent too. Lodging may be an issue at this late date, but if you call around ASAP you might get lucky. The CV Resort Lodge would be your best bet and it would have ice skating, snow tubing, and indoor pool to boot.
Hi kwillg6! Thanks for your quick reply. To answer your questions, I was not thinking of classes this weekend since they have been to two ski camps already. Just wanted them to keep practicing along with me. I am looking for overnight and have luckily found a few places in near Timberline for a good price on VRBO. As for experience, we enjoy night skiing, but we are OK with a quiet place. Thanks!
Wake up early - ski from 8am to 10:30am.
Have lunch at 10:45.
Go back and ski some more between 11:30 and 1:00.
Rest (take a siesta) and do it again from 6:30pm to 9pm.
Rest and do it again the next day.
That's a busy weekend coming up - the busiest / craziest of the season - but there is so much to enjoy.
I'll be deep into the woods on xc gear.
kwill's advice about CV on Sat and Tline on Sun or Mon is good. Basically, CV is a premier crowd avoidance hill in our region and not very crowded anytime! Plenty of good terrain there for intermediates and novices (assuming their trail count is good right now?).
The one thing t-line has over anybody else for beginners is Salamander... a 2 mile novice run that the kids would love. It doesn't have night skiing though. If you follow Vic's advice by dinner, the kids will be tired or ready to try something else. Tubing, skating or whatever their hearts desire. The valley will seem more like a destination and a real ski trip to the mountains. For meals, ask any local and they'll direct you somewhere where the fare is decent and reasonable. See you on the mountain!
Caution: with the weather report, be ready for some snowy driving conditions. Take your time. There's no rush.
Towards the end of the 2009 I bought a Pepsi from a vending machine at Timberline. I took a sip and it tasted kind of funny, so I took a closer look at the bottle and saw it was 2+ years expired.
I have not used the vending machines at either Snowshoe or Whitetail.
LOLOL. That is sooo classically Canaan Valley.
The vending machines are actually rigged so that "usually", nothing will come out. You got lucky (well, not really, but still lucky that one came out).
and Fish... twinmom isn't going to be drinking Pepsi; there are kids involved.
Feel I must chime in here.
I have taken my six skiing grandkids to Snowshoe each of the last three MLK weekends, and we all have had a blast, albeit it a crowded one. The kids (all ages 9 and down) have skied with the skischool and with parents. If go to Snowshoe, essential you have a place to stay. The Silver Creek part of Snowshoe has night skiing and is usually much less crowded than the Basin area. But the grandkids have skied at the Basin area most of the time and had a ball.
Enjoy where ever you go, all will be crowded. If at Canaan Valley, look into rooms at the CV Lodge, might be some good deals. Ride the bus to the slopes, and as others have said, CV slopes are rarely crowded. CV Lodge has indoor pool, ice skating, and zillions of deer.
Enjoy,
The Colonel

Too late for this weekend, but for future reference, Massanutten is worth considering for a holiday weekend. Skied for two hours straight 9:30-11:30 and never waited in line on Lift 6. My daughter could handle these black runs at age 7 after starting in the Mnut ski school at age 4.
Here's what the MLK Sat morning looked like two years ago. Today was pretty much the same. The wait on the two beginner lifts was about 5 min at 3:30pm.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone. All advice was wonderful. We ended up at T-line and have had two wonderful days! The slopes are perfect and the weather good for skiing. We got lucky and found a room -- last minute special due to someone canceling. Sometimes it pays to delay!
On a similar experience, I once travelled to France and got a last minute airline ticket for 90% off. You see, in Europe, the just want to fill the planes and last minute travellers can really get on with great deals.
In a similar instance in LA, I paid DOUBLE.
Hummmm....
