Hey all - I found myslef with the day off tomorrow so I'm going out to Wisp for for friday and saturday. Any tips (food, rental places, things to avoid) would be super helpful. In this area, I have only been to Snowshoe and CV.

Thanks, and everyone have a great weekend -

Here's a recent thread on dining options around Wisp:

The mountain is very straight forward and enjoyable. If on Saturday the lift lines get a little long on the front side, just head to North Camp or Mainstreet for crowd avoidance. On a clear day the Eye Opener trail in Mainstreet area has some of the best views in mid-Atlantic skiing with Deep Creek Lake as a backdrop. They usually do a great job with snowmaking and slope conditions.

We were there this past Monday. I'm not sure if it's a real trail, but there was some glade skiing to be had just below the mid-station. Sign on the tree said "Terrapin Trail" and that lead to another glade "Hocus Pocus" which dumped into Devils Drop. There is a part of me that wonders if those are really mountain bike trails. In any event, they were fun and no one seemed to mind us being in there.

These are bike trails, but I skied there this past weekend and there is some good tree skiing between The Face and Devils Drop and Devils Drop had decent coverage except for a few weeds and mud spots that were easily avoided. If they get a few more inches of snow in the next 24 it should be in good shape again.

There was also some good tree action off of Wisp Trail on skiers right, as there are some bike trails in the area below Deer Run between Wisp Trail and Squirrel Cage.

Bumps on The Face were the way I like them, soft and loosely spaced, but true bump freaks would not like them because I suck at bumps. The rest of resort has good snow coverage.

One thing to mention about Wisp is that wind is a factor there. The mountain has three faces, which are all prominent, meaning no terrain is higher near by. It will be very cold on Sat. so I would spend my first few runs trying to find out where the wind is----and is not.

North Camp, facing west, can be brutal (think the front side of Liberty on a windy day). The east face (Mainstreet) is usually well protected, but offers no beginner runs. The front which faces north---well it faces north. So good luck.

From the top of the hill, look straight ahead: that's Canaan Valley. The valley will be warmer on Sat (about 2 degrees warmer) and under these brutal circumstances, guess what I would recommend!?

Yep, Vic good view south as you get off any of the front side lifts. Best view is from the south wall of the ASCI whitewater pond. XC'd along it last weekend. Just find the power plant and the rest of the view falls in line, even the MPC massif--opposite view of other recent threads here.

Being as cold as it will be in Wisp, the view SHOULD in theory be fantastic. Just remember: 2 degrees warmer... so perhaps you should be in Canaan looking at the absolutely Gorgeous WISP.

I'll second what TGV said. We skied CV on Sunday and Wisp on Monday. CV was cold but Wisp was colder - add in the wind and Wisp was at times brutal.

I was there all last weekend, and there was something about Mon. that I could not explain. The wind was coming from the south east I think because you could smell the paper mill, at least in the morning. I could not find a place to escape the wind on any face or lift. I quit about midday and was cold and ready to go when we left. I did not warm up until Cumberland and I rarely get cold skiing.

Heading to TL today, so we will see how this weekend goes. At least it will be 2 degrees warmer in the Valley---right TGV.
