Solid evening skiing at Massanutten last night. Decided on Massanutten over Wintergreen due to the fact that Massanutten has let a couple runs bump up. As JohnL and David can attest, I am no great shakes on the bumps. But, I do enjoy the challenge and it is hard to get better on the bumps when your home resort grooms everything. Conditions were good - they were blowing a ton of snow, probably in anticipation in the warm weather next week leading up to Pres. day weekend. It made for some really fun skiing - the thick layer of man-made on top of the bumps made them really forgiving, and once I figured out a line through the oddly shaped bumps on MakAttack I could zip through more aggressively than I usually do. Paradice was also getting bumped up on skier's left, especially near the top where it is a bit steeper.

One thing that I thought was interesting was that the Diamond Jim/Paradice liftline seems to have been widened a bit (at least, I think this was the case). Do any of the Massanutten skiers here have the same impression? Probably doesn't mean anything, but it did cause me to speculate a bit on possible future improvements...

Nice report - I was up at the nut last evening too and was surprised at how good the conditions were. Not only were they blowing tons of snow, but a little snow shower came through and put down a light dusting.

I found some really nice, consistent packed powder on Showtime was able to rip some good turns down that slope. I actually took my biggest spill of the season coming down Diamond Jim later in the night when I somehow caught the outside edge of my downhill ski, and got tossed to the ground like a rag doll. As hard as a wacked my head into the ground, I can almost guarantee that without a helmet I would gotten a concussion.

I too have noticed the widening of that lift line - that would be awesome if they added a run there but I'm thinking they were just trimming the trees back away from the lift. Massanutten has been making some improvements upgrading their lifts the past two seasons, so maybe something is brewing, we shall see!

Abe,

Were you one of the two telemarkers I saw last night? I think I might have been standing in your line when I stopped at the top of the bumps on paradice to adjust my boots. Sorry about that!

Ha, indeed I was! I have a blue jacket / black helmet. No worries - I don't have a line when I ski bumps so you didn't mess me up wink

We'll have to hook up for some turns at the nut one of these days...

Haven't been at Mnut quite as often this season as last year, but we can only make it on weekends in any case. Heard directly from Steve that they are taking down Lift 5 (old double) after the season is over to replace it with a triple.

Glad there is finally a webcam. Hoping to get in one more weekend March 12-13.
