The countdown is on. About a month left for skiing in thre mid atlantic and three till our favortite rite of spring, t-line's snowy luau. Who's planning on being there?
Definite maybe but I'll be in the Valley beginning March 5 for a week.
I would like to get down to Timber Line sometime over the next 10 days for a first visit. Looking at NOAA, this Saturday or next Tuesday or Wednesday look the most promising. Any idea what kind of shape the snow is in? Is it likely to hold up thru the rain we are going to have in the next few days?
Thanks!
Plenty of snow left at T-Line to survive Friday rain. They have a deep base on most of their trails.
Bringing the leis and the grass skirts
see you there!
I'll be there, I made my reservations in August.
Tree skiing was (bluntly) incredible yesterday, being so late in the season. Timberline had a great base left on nearly all trails. 2 or so inches of rain isn't going to help: so stay tuned as it is still raining in the valley.
Temperatures are cooling down tonight (in a big way). I'll be sure to ski my heart out tomorrow and report back the "happiness" or "complete devastation".
Coverage in the trees on Sat. was certainly better than I expected. I'll be interested to hear how things have held up after today's rain.
Last Monday: stay home!
Tue: WOW... weather-perfect
Wed: a bit windy, great snow, tons of coverage, excellent sunny day.
Base is like 5+ feet on most groomed slopes.
Base is like: Gone in most glades.
Grooming was to near-perfection.
Today: Rain, possibly mixed with sleet, becoming all rain after noon. High near 41. Breezy, with a southeast wind between 21 and 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
Tonight: Rain. Low around 40. Breezy, with a south wind 19 to 22 mph decreasing to between 11 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
Thursday: Showers, mainly before 5pm. High near 45. South wind around 11 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Time to start building an ark? It's been about 40 days since early February.
Canaan will weather this latest barrage & come out smelling like a rose...or fresh flakes i should say...
New Snow: 2" so far w/ 7"- 9" sunday
Snow so far this season: 183"
9 am weather: 28 sleet and snow
That was from the WG site this morn...
Backside snow from this system & some more snow potential this weekend/early next week...& then the drum roll please for the Luau!...looking for another 200" season..
A winter storm watch is out for the valley starting Thursday evening... looks like they could pick up a good shot of snow from that storm!
Could this similar to what Mad River got last weekend from the same storm? ~1 inch of rain followed by 30 inches of snow.
Thursday: Showers, mainly before 1pm. High near 45. South wind around 11 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
Thursday Night: Rain and snow likely before 11pm, then snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 26. West wind between 11 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.
Friday: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 31. West wind between 13 and 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
Hey Abe,
Your powder skiing should be well-practiced. CV will seem flat after Snowbird.

See what ya did to yourself Abe?..Steep Powder..the HARD stuff..Your a Ski head like JL (skiers version of a crack head)...Since we don't have the rehab center built yet (MPC)(Perks vs Crack hits)..Eventually you just hit Rock Bottom..a big Yard sale at the base of Seneca Rocks
Still looking Rainfree with maybe some Freesnow for the Luau..keep your skiis crossed!
Ski head? I thought you said a while back ago that JohnL was a "Richard Head"????
So Andy....whats the latest?
The models have been doing some flipflopping, whats the Valley going to get out of this by Friday am & Saturday am?
Looking at the models, Oglebay may be the place to be tomorrow.
Looking at the models, Oglebay may be the place to be tomorrow.
We both know one crazy Oglebay local that may be there shedding some pow pow tomorrow.
Yeh David..JL is a richard Head for bustin in on a Home biscuit Thread to throw out his evil barbs ..we got 2 or three glorious Utah threads going on right now!..its all good though..just havin fun..
SNOWING in the Alpps since early Aft!..just got in from work & was surprised to see that the Cooler weather has crept in allready...SS'S cam shows a lot of white stuff on thr Ground & coming down!
I have noticed the same SCWA..We went from what i thought a couple of days ago was just going to be a few inches on the backside of the rain storm to a Winter storm warning then back to a weather advisery.
Just looking at the latest obs & Radar (just got in from work) i'm thinking that at Valley Floor level (3200') on up we should see Winter Storm amounts which I think the NWS has upped to 6 inches or more..isn't that the new criteria for a winter storm?..it used to be 4 inches..
PS..The Eskimos are "Chillin"..Eureka, Nunavut
-49 °F
Clear
Any update from the ground in CV? The Dolly Sods webcam showed it was dumping snow around 5 pm...
Its 30 degrees at 4800'..32 at 3800' & 34 at 3300'...Been that way for a couple of hours. There is a good layer of Snow showing on the Shoe Cam...like the last storm, the elevation is a big factor. I've been up to the Valley during past March storms where there was 2 inches at the Base of TL & almost 6 at the top.
I have skied at Timberline with rain falling to about halfway up the chair, then a mixture with snow at the top, really coming down...much harder than the light rain below.
WV Alpps...a weather maker indeed!
The Colonel
Last week it looked like there could have been a backside to a system (fri's chance of rain to snow sat) to give a little "freesnow"..but I'm sure everybody will take a "rainfree" Luau!..looks like a perfect Spring luau..
Friday and Friday Night
Mostly cloudy. A 30 percent chance of showers. Highs around 60. Lows in the upper 30s.
Saturday and Saturday Night
Partly cloudy. Highs in the lower 50s. Lows around 30.
Sunday
Sunny. Highs in the mid 50s.
Looks like I won't be making it to the Luau this year. Had a change of plans at the last minute. We had a fire in our apartment building here in Lewisburg. We didn't get any fire damage, but did get some smoke. My family took a Uhaul load yesterday that had most of my ski stuff in it. And it's looking like Luau weekend and the week after (my spring break) are going to be cleaning days for me.
I hope everyone has fun!! Ski some for me!!
Dr. (to be) David,
Sorry to hear about the fire. Thankfully you and yours are OK!
Anything you need?

Snowy Luau,
Much the same events, but it seems to me there are more charges to participate/view than in past years...albeit that the charges are very modest!
The Colonel
$2 for a parking isn't bad - considering that the fireworks involves 1000's of dollars spent. Frankly, as broke as I am, I'd pay $10 for the show - to ensure that there would be snowmaking for the following year to come
Looks like the parking is only for the Sat evening fireworks show? No real complaints on that one, but knowing how T-Line runs things, expect some sort of disarray.
Decoration: A PREVIEW -
People will add to the decor - later today, Sat, and SUNDAY!

I wasn't really complaining about it, but having been to the last 7 Snowy Luau's and I never realized they charged for parking.
BTW - Does Tline rent tele skis?
TGV - My hat's off to you....your photos actually make that dump look decent.
SC: Yes. There are 4 very recent pairs of skis, plus several other very capable teles for rent. Come early for best selection. If you know that you have a very small or very large foot, I recommend calling ski school FIRST.
YELL: Thanks - most kind. Pictures show exactly how the resort looks like (well, minus a little bit of paint)
BTW - Does Tline rent tele skis?
Whitegrass does. I'd go there. Trust me.
now David... White Grass has some fine (very fine) telemark skis for rent, but:
I am certain that you have NOT seen the last 4 pairs of skis that I brought in the Tline (3 of which have brand new bindings)
Either way though:
1) be sure to call your pref rental location FIRST
2) let them know you are coming
3) share you estimated size needs
TGV,
My sister called Tline and they said they didn't rent Tele gear. She ended up going to WG and getting a sweet pair of Karhu midfats to ski on.
Looks like its going to be another nice day, time to go ski.
TGV are you skiing today? Check your PM.
Took the day off from skiing - however, I'll be there tomorrow.
I'd love to know who said TLine didn't rent teles... RRRRRR
(they just have no idea how much work couple of people and myself went through to get these teles)
I did hear that the snow condition was very acceptable (between the rain drops).
Look for me near the ski school desk.
The snow was pretty good on Monday. OTW felt like you were skiing butter. Took a break right as the rain & thunder started. Did some runs late afternoon on the Drop, it was still pretty crunchy.
How was the trail cover when you left? Looks like The Valley received over an inch of rain Sun PM/Mon PM.

Even after the rain Sunday night & mid-day Monday, the snow was still in great shape.
Even went Cherry picking yesterday. I'll post a couple pictures later today.

Eager to see the pics--might try and head up there for closing weekend.
