June Mtn. 3/5&6
March 6, 2011
It's a midget compared to Mammoth, owned by the same Co. and on the same lift ticket. Nobody goes there and there are great tree runs. I've never had a bad day there. My Mammoth host was easily convinced to go there since he knows very well how many LA people go to Mammoth on a bluebird Saturday. The trees were interesting. It snowed last 3 days ago. Lots of untracked snow but crust in the sunlit patches, soft turns in shade. It adds an extra dimension when you must not only look for the spaces but also start your turns in the shade. It was great fun. Over a 45 min lunch it warmed 10 deg, got sunnier, and it all turned to glop. Our posse of 4 all quit after one run of lurching and grabbing and fearing going over the handlebars into trees. But we had had 3 hrs. of great skiing.
Today I was alone, same place, intense snow squalls that would drop 2" or so in 20 min. It wasn't enough to cover yesterday's crust. One run in the trees convinced me to stay out of there. But, the groomed runs had 4" of powder and absolutely nobody there. It is rare to be able to rip huge high speed tele turns and not have to worry about anybody else. Once again, it all ended and sun turned it to glop shortly after noon. People were still pulling into the parking lot, unaware I guess, that the best skiing happens in the morning. I've never had a bad day at June.
