If anyone is wondering how folks in Canaan can still be skiing trees in mid-march(check out pics in SCWVA latest timberline post w/ pic), then you will enjoy reading this climate study that was written by a guy who used to live around here. Some of the comparisons to different regions are amazing.

I have not made it all the way through the whitepaper Tucker, but today is an interesting example. We were up at Wisp and came back via Mount Storm and Greenland Gap. It was amazing in that Garrett County was all brown except for some very very limited coverage on north facing slopes that were left over drifts. Along 50 by Mount Storm and 42 to the power plant there was a good consistent 6 inches in the woods. My rule of thumb is that if you can see 6 inches in the woods from the road, there is at least a foot in the darker hollows and up high.

thanks for the read Tucker. Bob Leffler is usually spot on with his forecasts too when he contradicts what the noaa fcast might say.

The snow is still DEEP up on Weiss Knob back country and elsewhere up high. By deep I mean 24-30" of natural snow. and it's been snow packed since december so thats 24+ inches of awesome cooked down base to be corn skiing easily into april. So much spruce and birch up there makes it naturally gladed and very skiable lines not to mention much more aestheticlly pleasing than the hardwood glades.

a bit of video of saturdays ski in the creamy snow on weiss knob and almost into gandy creek!

our private ski area on weiss knob but anyone can join smile

I may be joining you a bit next year. I'm planning on getting an AT set-up for my Blizzard skis. Blizzard has a mounting plate which makes it real easy to swap in different bindings. Takes about one minute.

Still don't like bending my knees...
