HELLO HELLO Anybody out there???
Can we talk about skiing? That is what did you do for the first time this past season?
I made my first ski trip to Colorado- skied two days at Vail, Breck and ABasin.
I rode the t-bar lift at Breckenridge and that was a first for me. While it's not exactly skiing uphill it's much more strenuous than riding a chairlift especially in the 30-40 mph cross wind that day.
My first time for the DCSki outing at Blue Knob and first time for skiing the Bowl.
Waiting patiently for the first flakes.
I skied Aspen Highlands and Snowmass this season. For all the years I've been skiing I'd never been to either.
Sadly I didn't get to ski with Jimmy this season.
- was not the first ski with jimmy (that was in '08)
- was not the first T-bar (that was in '72)
firsts:
first Marker/Royal binding skied.
first Goode ski with an actual !core! skied
first rockered ski that I actually liked (as a ski, _not_ because it was rockered)
Maybe the first season I've topped 40 days?
First time at Loveland.
First time I've skied with the Three Stooges of Tele.
First time I've skied rockered skis.
First time I've bought rockered skis.
First time I've skied the Local's Cup. (And the slowest fast skier to do it.)
First time I've made closing weekend at T-Line.
Last time I'll ski as non-AARP eligible.

During Jan '11 roadtrip skied several places in Utah for the first time, foremost being Alta. It lived up to the hype and it wasn't even a powder day.
Skied first time with Charlie at BK, he lived up to his hype too:-)
Have yet to ski with Denis, but vicariously enjoyed his run pictured here at Alta in Feb '11:
Denis in the Ballroom again and again!
Almost can't get up, you didn't really think i was going to hike back up there to help

Denis is your season over yet?
Hey JimK
I didn't know I had any hype!!!
Awwwww....Denis! Now you have me thinking about another first.

I always follow JimK. First time skiing in OOOTAH also. Brighton, Solitude, Snowbasin, Alta, Deer Valley in order. Record snow DROUGHT week. Surface progressed from mixed to hardpan during the week, snow resumed dumping day after we left. All in all, I loved it of course.
here's an easy one: where is this?

Is that Snowbasin?
Looks like plenty of snow in that picture. What timeframe?
First time I did not get to ski at all during a season.

Not Snowbasin, though it does sort of look like the area up around the porcupine lift.
I was there Feb 10-16, iirc, that's me in the lower left standing around. There was plenty of snow, just not much fresh unless you traversed a lot like in this picture. Marzski took the picture.
Not Alta. Keep trying.
I wonder if there is a 3rd generation Engen in the pipeline at Alta?
Hate to say it, but that is not an easy one since there are no distinctive terrain features.

Maybe traversing out in Honeycomb Canyon.

If I'm not mistaken you also skied Mad River Glen for the first time last winter.

Mount porte crayon,West virginia..
views of wiess knob, Job Knob.. High mountain, & those 4000' + peaks between MPC "Almost Heaven" & Elkins...
2000 vert of some of the greatest terrain south of Mount mansfield,Vt..
5 year snow ave well over 210 inches..
Still waiting for that "1st time'!!!!

bingo, that's it. now which chute? I loved honeycomkb, right up until the electricity went out on the summit lift. After that it was fun in the Paradise area. I liked Solitude almost as much as that more famous famous place.
......... Alright, how about this one...

That's the Cupp/Shay's side of Snowshoe??
First time I skied Mad River Glen with JimK and Vince. We also skied historic Suicide Six on the same outing.
Mad River was a real revelation and lived up to its hype. The condition were the best despite the immature snow that fell the day before. All the expert trails were just that, expert trails either by steepness or bumps or both with several ice falls and boulder drops peppered in just to keep things interesting. I also found that groomed natural snow skis better than groomed machine made snow. (Yes, Mad River does groom a few trails.)
Suicide Six is the child of the first rope tow in the US. In 1934 Bunny Bertram work for Bob and Betty Royce who financed the rope tow on Gilbert's Hill outside of Woodstock VT. The next winter he set up an improved electric motor tow on a nearby hill that would expand to become know as Suicide Six by 1937 but that is another story.
Suicide is about the size of your average mid-Atlantic resort, 650 vertical feet serviced by two double chairs. The terrain is surprisingly diverse with steeper, 'suicidal' pitches, a few glade runs and longer intermediate cruisers that make the hill ski bigger than it is. The conditions that weekday afternoon consisted of the immature snow mentioned above. By day's end we had the place to ourselves. Suicide Six is an interesting historic ski area worthy of a visit by history buffs as well as skiers seeking less crowds while still looking for a little challenge.
......... Alright, how about this one...
From the very consistent traverse line and tracks above from the ridge top, I'm guessing the run-out of one of the Sister's at Snowbasin. The gate at the bottom is consistent with my guess.
Second guess would be Devil's Castle, but I don't think there is skiing above the traverse line. Maybe time for a separate thread...

Correct ski area, but wrong side.
Snowbasin was a bad windy day - Strawberry area was probably the hardest concrete snow I have ever skied, fast but a little boring. John Paul side was more fun but no fresher. Porcupine area great but the slowest lift ever. That photo is the fingers chutes just around the peak from the top of the downhill. The area is so big, I could stop and wonder - where am I, have I been here before?
First time hiking the ridge at Taos. Also the first time jumping off a cornice to get onto a trail. And possibly the first time I got to the top of a trail, looked down, and thought "This may have been a bad idea."
We did fine and will do it again.
Well my first time this season was Monday November 23, 2010 - the Monday before Thanksgiving -- at Keystone. Snow conditions were the best I've ever seen early season.
On the first run of the season, about 1/3 of the way down the 2300 feet of vert, something clicked and everything started to work. I ended up having the best "first run of the season" in my life. I was in "March form" the rest of the day.
I ended up skiing 17 runs that day - all nonstop top to bottom. Got in 32,880 of vert. Those 15 mile bike rides I do pre-season sure do make opening day easier.
Little did I know it at the time, but that day would start what would be a record season for me. 64 days (most ever), 20 powder days (most ever), 3,040,000+ feet of vert (most ever and my first time over 3 million feet of vert in a season)...
and June 10 at A-Basin is a definite possibility
Bob, I don't know how to say this nicely, but I hate you.
.....can I visit you next year?
Bob, I don't know how to say this nicely, but I hate you.
Ditto....

Definitely a season of firsts for me with 55 days of skiing and only three days of ice skiing. First time to ski in New Hampshire (Dartmouth, Cannon, Bretton Woods, Sunapee & Wildcat). First time to ski in Maine (Sugarloaf and Saddleback). First time to ski Magic and Bromley. First time to ski in Montana (Big Sky and Moonlight basin). Already planning more fists for next season.
Ridgeman, that's a lot of first time ski area visits in one season, and to some interesting places.

Could you give us a short synopsis of your favorites among them and various pros and cons you experienced?
We never answered this trivia. I have no idea, looks like a bunch of places.
I might know where that place is.

Looks like it is at pretty high elevation. Maybe close to 13,000 feet?
I'm guessing from the hint that it's at Breck somewhere.
Even though the picture is from behind, I'm certain that there's a smile on JohnL's face.
I'm guessing from the hint that it's at Breck somewhere.
The mountains in the background are the backside of Breck; (or close to it.)

I linked the photo, but I don't know the correct answer. I thought you were at Breckenridge for that shot. But given your hint, my guess is that you three are heading down Spaulding Bowl at Copper Mtn, CO?

Ah, I remember, tricky.
