Tour of California snowed out!
May 20, 2011
The first stage of the Tour of California that was scheduled for yesterday was cancelled due to snow. Yesterdays stage was to circle Lake Tahoe and end up at Squaw. Todays' stage was to start at Squaw and finish in Sacramento. Todays start has been moved to Nevada City as there was 13" of snow at lake level and over 20" up high. Squaw is open until May 30th.
Squaw Snow Report
Nice. I'm guessing snow and road racing don't go well together.
I see some Tahoe in your future, young man. Epic Gathering?

Just checked that out on Epic. Right after I checked my schedule for that time next year. Out of 12 months that were randomly scheduled for me, those Epic dates fall into an open block. Which means that I can schedule a rotation or some vacation for that time. Coincidence?

I was holding out hope for this year, but it looks like I'll have to settle for next.
I'll put the Gathering on my calendar. I love Tahoe, I've skied Alpine, Squaw, & Homewood. I would love to add Kirkwood and even Heavenly to the list.
Rocking bunch of skiers and drinkers. And generally plenty of locals with local's knowledge.
You'll be forced to upgrade those 1080's during the trip. Some gear hogs with some good deals. Just ask Jimmy bout that. Jimmy has skis in nearly every time zone.
Squaw Valley has just reached over 700 inches of total snow accumulation- something that has never happened in Squaw Valley's recorded history.
Squaw Valley opened in 1949.
And in the context shown above, here's a pertinent reminder of alarmism past:
"...there is no greater truth than global warming, with its threat of a shrinking snowpack..."
That is from this article in the San Francisco Chronicle in October of 2006.
(10-27-2006) 04:00 PDT Norden, Nevada County - For the ski industry, both in California and rest of the nation, there is no greater truth than global warming, with its threat of a shrinking snowpack and the point that Yogi Berra once made so succinctly: "The future ain't what it used to be."
...
If nothing is done to curb emissions, greenhouse gas emissions could raise Sierra temperatures another 5 or 6 degrees by the end of the 21st century, according to some projections. The snowpack could be reduced by 89 percent.
