Trip Report A-Basin June 11, 2011
June 14, 2011
Well I did get out to Colorado for a day of June skiing - the first time I've done that since 1993.
Snow conditions were amazing with more snow than I've ever seen in June. Of course it was regularly snowing heavily here until about two and a half weeks ago. Black Mountain Express and Lenawee were running. Palavacini was closed, but there was more than enough snow for it to have been open.
It was under 30 degrees at 6 am. I started skiing at 8:25 -- they actually started loading people 5 minutes early. I expected teeth rattling frozen conditions. Instead it was fantastic corn starting with the first run. It stayed pretty cool because of overcast and light cloud cover until about 10 O'Clock. It started getting sticky midway down and lower at about 10:30. It got crowded at about 11 (I wasn't the only one wanting to take advantage of the great conditions), so that's when I packed it in.
A-Basin is still scheduled to be open next weekend, and they are thinking about extending further into June or maybe the 4th of July. No decisions of further extensions to the season have been made
Anytime I can get in 15 runs in June is a pretty good day. So now I have 65 days this season and a bit over 3,050,000 vert.
It was so much fun that I'm tempted to do it again tomorrow, but if I do I'll have to leave by 10 because I have a meeting in Breckenridge at noon.
Big mistake Bob. Everyone on this forum now greatly despises you.
Just joking. Glad your still able to get out and get after it!!!
Thanks Dave. Actually, I was hoping that everyone could vicariously live the experience with me.
Well I did get out again. It's amazing what 2 silly degrees can mean to conditions, It was two degrees cooler this morning than yesterday, and it was rock solid, teeth rattling hard at the top this morning.
Luckily, unlike yesterday it was a total blue sky, sunny day so everything softened up real quick. I checked out out the skimming pond at 10 and decided to NOT go for it. The dead giveaway was that there were lots of tracks leading into the pond, and no tracks coming out the other end. I'm no fool.
I had a condo board meeting in Breckenridge at noon, so I had to quit at about 10:15. Got in 9 runs though. My season is now officially, and irrevocably over.
Hope that everyone has a good summer.
Weather History
Did you know that...
On this date in 1907 Tamarack, Calif. set a national low temperature record for the month of June when it recorded a temperature of -2 degrees. Additionally, the town received 42 inches of new snow from the 10th to the 13th to bring the ground cover to a depth of 130 inches.
Folks must have thought the world was coming to an end back then!
That's actually much more amazing than anyone skiing in June. Heavy snow in June at altitude is not unusual. A-Basin has had closing day fireworks displays in snowstorms on July 4 in the past. 2 below in June is simply awe inspiring.
By the way, it appears that Utah has it much better than Colorado this year, and Colorado is pretty amazing.

Yeah the Bird didn't have any bare spots the first weekend of June. Definately some slush slides though.
I think that's why the Basin's Palavacini lift was closed. 2-3 years ago a person was killed by an in bounds slush slide off of Palavacini. Only greens and Blues were open - nothing that would ever be likely to slide.
