Coming out of your summer hybernation L-ski?

This will be the earliest Snow accumulation at the Valley floor since records have been kept..I Think.
I always look for an early Snow up top on the last days of Sept & spotted this system back on the 24th.. but the last time the Valley had Accum Snow at 3200' was 4 inches back in 1974 on oct 3rd so it was hard to believe the models at 1st.

This snow also gives the WV Alpps the 1st snow on the east coast award!..(Mount Washington's skiff doesn't count)

just got back from the annual all day fall mtb ride and snow got heavier as the day went on making for some surreal biking in colors and snow smile 32 from the heights to davis is a little slushy and as sketchy as the bike trails are right now!

yep... summer hibernation officially over!

.. very jealous chaga.

I actually was contemplating making the drive up to the valley tonight for some turns tomorrow morning. If I knew someone in the DC area who would be willing to make the drive and hike tomorrow I would already be in the car. I would guess that by tomorrow morning there will be some serious accumulations (2-4) in the valley and possibly 3-6 up in the sods.... well, serious by October 1st standards!

All I know is that someone needs to make some turns and post some pics.

I definitely don't have the gear to do much, but I do have a pack that just might carry skis.

Chaga, what are you getting into in the AM?

you will have to hike up high..

The thinking was that Canaan would transition into a colder upslope event overnight but the storm just sat & spun bringing in a warm moist feed from the atlantic.

Another inch of slush overnight with the freezing line at 3700' & 28 at 4800'....Bet there is a good half foot up on MPC..

Dave's weather site reports 3.4" on Canaan Mountain. I imagine that there's half a foot on the ridges over 4200.

yeah it looks like the burst we saw on cam last night was short lived.... goes to show how perfect the conditions need to be for snow on october 1st!

Yea - Hi team!! Snowshoe reports 4 inches of new snow. CNN even showed the Timberline snowflakes. I tried on my boots, and was able to walk around, despite the broken hip. We will soon be on the slopes!
Hope to see some of you at the Fall festivals - Liberty on the 16th and Whitetail on the 22nd and 23. Charles and I will offer reports and photos.
Think snow, and no broken bones! Connie Lawn and Charles Sneiderman

You've always seemed pretty hip connie.hope it heals soon!

Just got back from Surf fishing on Masonboro Island,NC...Air temp was in the upper 60's but the water temp is still in the upper 70's...North meets south!

As I was fishing I noticed those many Nugget clouds...the ones that are left over from what were snow clouds over the Southern alpps...This is too early for that!..The fishing was slow since the fish were confused!..(did have a hit where my rod tip almost hit the sand being bent over so hard before the line snapped)...

Snow is nice but this is the time of year where the only ice I need should be in my cooler!!

It should snow all night up in the Alpps..then get back to nice days for awhile...lets enjoy Fall!

It snowed all day and still is, but you had to be over 3500' to see snow on the ground today. I did get to stop by Dave Leshers house and learn about his setup and ask 20 questions, especially about how he measures snow with all the wind and drifting that comes with almost every storm.

Well we tried to ride last night. Got about three inches on my deck and shoveled the take off for a log jib, but then it turned to rain and melted the snow on my neighbors decks before we could get the landing done.

Who is this Todd Romero???...Crunchy??

Down here in the flatlands, all they were talking about was the shoe. Only Topper Shutt on WUSA was refering to this being an "elevation" snow event. I figured the ridges got more and Chips pics on his web site verified that.

I talked with some people who saw firsthand ~1 foot deep drifts on the Roaring Plans pipeline. On the whole they said the Roaring Plains got about 8" on average. And that's around 300 feet higher in elevation than Timberline.

Not me this time. I have been kind of Mr. First Tracks and Last Tracks at Whitegrass over the last decade or so, excepting Chip and his sons of course. It's a role I have relished. This time I was in Chicago getting acquainted with and helping with a new grand daughter. She is the first girl after 3 grand sons and a perfect beautiful baby if I do say so myself. smile And, oh yeah, There is also a pesky knee. MRI yesterday, consultation w. doc on Fri. Meanwhile I have ridden the bike and it feels good enough to ski.

Congratulations on the grand daughter Denis. October is not a good time to take care of a pesky knee though?

You speak truth Jimmy, as always. I was taking a run 2+ weeks ago and on a slight downhill something popped in the left knee with pain and I went down like I'd been shot. After a few minutes I was able to limp back to my car and drive home. X-rays showed no damage to ACL or any of the other ligaments, to my amazement. I do have arthritic damage and bone on bone under the kneecap. This is not a surprise; I have been managing chondromalacia for years. MRI was ordered to look for a meniscus tear, which is likely. I also probably have chips of cartilage and perhaps bone floating around in there waiting for a particularly (in)opportune time to get between wearing surfaces. That is something I don't want to experience on skis, particularly in the backcountry.
