OK, nothing over the Thanksgiving holidays.
We're usually not so lucky anyway.
Then nothing the first weekend in December.
That's harder to swallow ... but, heck, we're just barely into the month.
Now looking ahead to December 9-10-11-12.
Time to Get Out There!
Who's going, and where?
Woody
PS I'm aiming for Wisp on the 11th or (more likely) the 12. And when Snow Time drops the ropes, I'll be there. Fire up those guns!
will wisp be able to open by this weekend? forecast temps not looking good for snowmaking until thursday at least.
Last Friday I went to Sugar Mountain's web site and sure nuff, they were open. Then again, there wasn't much snow and they were skiing a ribbon, but they were skiing. T-line, wisp, or anyone else could do the same here but will they?
I'd set the bar pretty low this upcoming weekend.
It will be a true test of how quickly the local areas can make massive amounts of snow. The web cams at Seven Springs and Wisp look pretty bleak. After the early week rain, there may be zero snow left on any slope. Looks like solid snowmaking weather hits Wed evening(?), but that's only 2+ days before the weekend.
Snow guns will likely be in full force everywhere on Saturday.
Tucker, you think T-Line could open the mid-station on Thursday? I have my doubts, but I'm three hours away...
Fish - The 84hr GFS & NAM forecasts are showing signs of some crazy snowfall amounts (2" to 10") for Wednesday/Thursday for the highlands, including some snow for DC. What do you think the chances are?
I'm hoping Wisp can get Squirrel Cage open for the 11th. If they can get one decent trail open for their birthday celebration, I'll be going up. Maybe I'll ask for Monday off just in case they aren't able to get it open till Monday.

No...I would bet midstation around the 17th and from the top around/after x-mas at best if the current forecast hold true...

Ive gotten dizzy watching & waiting for all the models to come together on a solution for the end of the rain & into the snow scene.
..been all over the place with more Flip flops than John kerry..or Romney to be fair & balanced!
I'm hoping for a turnover to snow earlier in the day Wed than the NWS is saying but not too heavy till late wed nite into thur morn. You know the story SCWVA..if it wraps up tight on the east side of the Mtns..a nice dump but a quick hitter. Or it could go progressively by just south & east to do too much Damage.
I'm going for the 1st snowier scenerio..but It looks to be a Quick hitter so it will be gone before too much Slamage...Then there is a clipper type cold shot for Fri/sat but that shouldn't be too snowy but very good for Snowmaking..cold dry arctic air!
For awhile now the 15/16th & 18th/19th give or take has been showing up on the long range for some possible snow action to lure me off the beach down here 8 hours away...I hope..but a long way away..
The unofficial word has t-line staying closed this coming weekend.
That being said, I don't see anywhere for good skiing this weekend UNLESS there is a development of a costal which is a remote possibility. Better put your money on next week and maybe, just maybe, it'll be cold enough to blow from top to bottom everywhere. This winter, so far is setting up like the occasional "non-winter." I'm not too optomistic at this point.

& after the rain bursted down gave truth to the fact..That the Snow was still there!..(sung to the tune of the National anthem by the SS snowmaking team))
& then Look..What does that big L mean??..I think you need to tone down your pessimism young man

Got your rock skis ready?
I've been cking him out every since you turned us on to him abe..I like the way he posts.
After a lot of his snow call maps which he got the lowlands correct but missed the big dump amounts from ss to canaan I would post on his blog about how much snow the Alpps got. He never answers anybody but looking at his latest maps I think he finally has the "snow Belt" figured out!
Just found out that Wisp will not open on the 11th for skiing and have rescheduled their birthday celebration for the 18th and 19th to focus on having better conditions for when they open.
Looks like the skis stay in closet for one more week.
I'm puzzled. The weather forecast for Snowshoe calls for rain throughout. Am I missing something?

NWS Charleston has been slow to the draw on this one..but they finally issued a winter advisery while Tucker/Garrett up north have had a warning since this morn..
http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php...p;FcstType=textI'm seeing a melted snow liquid amount of over an inch which ordinarily would give us well over a foot of snow but due to the warm ground & heavy wet snow that will fall I'm thinking close to a foot up at the Highest & most northern Mtns (MPC) & say around 8 inches for the bottom of Timberlines chairlift..If the Storm wasn't such a fast mover it would be a serious dumpage.
I love watching heavy wet Snow so I am Jealous of anybody that will witness it...

Woody, the word is Wisp is pushing B-Day event to Dec 18/19. I'm off 19th and may go that day if things work out. Can't do 18th. Wonder if this impending storm will be significant enough to change things??

I got nothing ready. Look's like i get another week to get my skit together.

Its appears Tline actually got more base down than WISP. May have to take the boards for a walk to check it out.
so many years I recall the early snows and the resulting weather throughout the rest of the year. In my experience, Dec comes in like a lamb and out like a lion, followed by some more heavy expectations from this leading to a rather bleak boring winter until late season when things get interesting again.
I think manmade is going to be king for the season honestly.
I honestly predict that we get a very nice dumping very soon that will have all the locals in full swing in no time. Something is forming way off in the distance that has me interested and investigating for potential , but like all weather and the stock market, hope in one hand and yea well you know the drill.
We shall see. Watch for it. Originally I predicted a nice dumping mid/late dec, now I'm thinking more along the lines of we are going to see news reports about all the stranded people at airports on xmas.
Official news from Timberline is that opening day just got bumped to Dec 17th.

Oh man... how exciting! Looks like the snow is accumulating fast at Wisp!

I see you posted that at 2:38pm Tucker...I just cked my weather study scribble notes & I had put down 230 as the time I thought the snow would make it down to the Valley floor. Just trying to Brag with no back up...Thats how I roll
Response to TL putting off the opening...& to respond to my earlier post where the Snowshoe team sang the Snow anthem..
Snowshoe Snow Report..
It's our favorite countdown of the year...TWO days until opening! The cold temps are arriving tonight, and we couldn't ask for anything more. We've picked up an inch and a half of rain over the last two days, which has thinned out our base a little, but we'll be able to turn the guns on tonight to rebuild some of what we lost. Snow is in the forecast for tonight and temps stay cold through the weekend. We'll be opening with the same plan, Snowshoe open from 9am-4:30pm and Silver Creek from 9am-9pm on Friday, December 9th. Keep thinking those cold and snowy thoughts and get ready to start the 11.12 season at Snowshoe!
PS looking like its Dumping HARD everywhere!!! (High Country)
allready showing on the sat..

Wow... 3.6" in 1.5 hrs in CV according to Dave Lesher!
Man, I'll miss his website...
I have been keeping my eyes open on Wisps webcams. At least as of now I can't see any guns blasting. I figured they would be blowing the heck outta the place while the snow was falling. Anyone see any guns fired? It's is clear right now not foggy like it was when it was snowing either. Just can't tell.
I was way too warm up there last night, it was only 31F when a majority of the snow came down.
I got an email from WISP, that says their "tenantive" openning date is 12/17/11. The guns are going this am.
10 F on the valley floor this am....should be crankin the guns now...

The Forest Service camera up on Bearden Knob is showing 48 F at 6am this morning. I did notice the other day that is was showing 69 F and is was raining and in the 30's on another site. Either there is a huge inversion or their thermometer is hosed.
I noticed that, thermometer must be hosed. You know what else is strange is that Timberline's web camera seems to be down.
that is shocking, normally T-line is on the cutting edge of technology.
yA Idunno D, this whole live webcam, youtoob, gopro internet thingy whereby people can see what's going on and get excited about it is just a fad and never will catch on.
WISP is blowing on every slope that is shown on the webcam, seems to be a bit ambitious but I'll have to give the credit for trying given the potential for rain & warmer weather later in the week.

....pretty soon it will be the 21st century and these types of things just might be popular...5 F on the valley floor this am
