Many of the trail counts, of course, separate the upper/middle/lower parts of a TTB run into 2 or 3 different "trails".

Area web cams looking pretty nasty today, so an "open" trail may not have been open in previous (better snow condition) years.

this is a very important point, and really bugs me when mid-a resorts are reporting trail counts (false advertising)...to me its a matter of how many real complete trails down from the top of a lift to the bottom of a lift...I can only speak for the valley so I will make those adjustment for anyone interested...
t-line --1 bunny hill green open, 1 green from midstation open
canaan --2 bunny hill green runs open, 1 blue from midstation open

AFAIK, this is the standard procedure for every single ski area in the U.S., not just the Mid-A. I agree that it is bogus.
yeah, but when they do it out west at a mountain for the most part they do it so you can navigate/find your way back to a lift, lodge, parking lot etc...seems as though when they do it in the mid-a they do it to increase the trail count...I am sure there are exceptions, but out west at mountains I haven't seen to many 50' stretches of a trail where you can't go anywhere else but continue on the same trail named a different name, or the flat area infront of the lodge where people take their skis off named a trail..
Wolf Creek, Silverton, Durango, and Taos have the only game in the country right now. Head west.
Heckuva rain last night, at least here in the northern Shenandoah Valley. Friday morning's webcams (aside from Snowshoe that doesn't have any, and the Allegheny Front ski areas that are pretty foggy right now) show precious little snow left. At least the rains cleaned off the brownish slush patches on the slopes.
Time for the reset button.
Temperatures will drop, the ground will freeze, and the snow guns will begin firing again. Christmas Week is at stake. The ski areas will go all-out to get some slopes ready and expand what's open. (Thanks in advance.) Looks like each night for the next week should bring temperatures cold enough for snowmaking.
Game on!
Merry Christmas,
Woody
(and for those celebrating, Happy Festivus, too!)
Timberline's projecting opening from the TOP with 1000 vertical feet starting Saturday 12/24 morning. See the
Snow Report tomorrow morning for couple of "cool" surprises!
WTG is down to 3. 1 blue (swoop) 1 connector (upper cross) and 1 bunny served by a double (potato patch). Web cam view is depressing...looks like late March. Lets hope everyone can take advantage of upcoming cold air.
I know that a lot of resorts have had to close down for a few days due to weather and all... but seriously, I cannot believe the amount of snow on Salamander Ski Trail!
It's officially open now - from the top with 2 miles of green.
It's like a freaky miracle, but a very positive one.
GREAT...2 miles Of a whole lot of Snow on Salamander..you got to Love that kind of Skiing voila..Ive seen you in action....take that snow & Add the way too much base for operations & you could have all the beginner area you need +..I said +++ about three top to bottom Runs..Is timberline a skiers Mtn or a beginners mtn?...should we as Johnf might suggest just accept the fact that winter doesn't get profitable till new years?..even though my house up there gets rentals every x-mas (I Know that they arn't renting to go running through the Meadows catching Butterflies!)??..should I just not accept rentals till new years?..I hate to rip anyone off!
PS..Just a reminder.. the lift has to go all the way to the top after dropping off everybody for the mid station runs...
& SS will have about 85 to 90 Acres open tommorow...Only about 100 acres at TL....
I'm Sounding kinda Grinchy..Huh?
FishnSki - tell your renters they have chosen a near-perfect & economical skiing getaway: Timberline (this year).
They'll have snow: plenty of green and one real Black Diamond trail - when 3 days before x-mas, temperatures were 59 degrees / T-shirts & shorts for skiing. A ski season when many other resorts will be somewhat struggling to open 400 feet of vertical. The mountain will be open from top to bottom (correction: IS OPEN with Salamander, and IS ABOUT to open with White Lighting).
The "real" season for rentals / skiers starts Dec 26th - Plenty of rentals already booked. They're blowing snow, so next I will probably get phone calls about snow guns being in their faces. LOL
Well, just in case: I am here to make sure you have a GREAT stay any where in Canaan Valley - so if you really want an unofficial number to call to complain, call me.
Seriously, with this weather, I am VERY HAPPY to report things opening. Could be far worst.
Saturday night the jolly old man will be dropping through chimneys across the land. I hope you have been good and will not awaken Christmas morning to find lumps of coal in your stocking. I also hope everyone will remember the real significance of the holiday. I don't consider myself overly religious and I'm often not quite politically correct, but I believe in the story I have been told since childhood that this was when God gave mankind the greatest gift of all.
You are right Voila...It could be a Whole lot Worse!...Merry Christmas!
MERY Christmas to you all !
ps. can we go skiing now?
What trails do you expect to have open at Timberline on Monday? Any more top to bottom runs? I am contemplating driving over tomorrow night but would just have Monday to ski, and am wondering if the 6 - 7 hour round trip will be worth it for a Monday. My wife had to fly out last minute for a family emergency Christmas evening, kind of a bummer, so I am thinking turn lemons into lemonade and get on the slopes. Anyone interested in carpooling over to Canaan Valley Sunday evening and back Monday afternoon?
Timberline just opened White Lightning today (Sat 12/24). First grooming, so I expect tomorrow will be very fun.
You now have two trails from the top:
Salamander: green, nearly 2 miles long.
White Lightning: black, straight down.
See the Snow Report for all other trails:
www.visitcanaan.com/timberline Comes Monday, you will most likely NOT find any else open at Timberline - we'd need a blizzard to change that. They are making snow though, as fast and as efficiently as possible.
I will have about 7 new photos tomorrow morning (by 5am) on the home page of
www.VisitCanaan.com
I will probably do another scan Sunday to pick a spot or two for next week. It looked like Canaan Valley might pick up some snow from the backside of this last storm.
