Looks promising
January 14, 2012
Looking at the various models indicating a pattern shift to colder weather later in the month. With the exception of NOAA, all are indicating a dip in the jet and colder air pushing down the spine of the Apps. Depending on how strong, we could see ongoing, prolonged lake effect events over the next several weeks. Even NOAA acknowledges that this can and may happen. Guess they don't like to use the delete button. What about it Andy?
Hope you're right. The present pattern has to break sometime.
In my experience NOAA is the best of them. Accunever loves to predict snow.
About 10 days ago I started to track a nice arctic shot coming down for...I'm guessing & hoping for this thur thru MLK?..I question that because 2 days ago after watching every model run religiously & seeing the possible this..possible that & the timing ect... that I decided to hide from any weather type of info & then head up to the mountains & just be surprised!!
..I'm hoping for the old school feeling of "its snowing pretty good right now...is this the begining of a dump?"..Or.."Ok..its over...is there a clipper coming around the corner?"...
I don't want to know when it starts.when it ends or if there is more to come...just like the (very) old days!!!
In fact...I'm going to have to avoid DCSKi also so....Let it snow..let it snow, I gots to go!
We got 0.6" of snow yesterday.
Got Snow?
The forecast is certainly looking promising for MLK weekend! It seems like we could end up with another foot of snow by Saturday morning with another clipper swinging through Sunday to freshen things up...
Think snow!
After looking at things inmore detail it appears that the valley should get 6+ tonight and tomorrow with more tomorrow night through Sunday. It could be the best skiing weekend of the year so far. With the lakes still warm, lake enhanced up sloping should guarentee freshies for the next several weeks.
I'm optimistic (for once)
Coming down good at Snowshoe right now
Canaan Valley morning update:
Counted 3+ inches this morning, but it's really my best guess so far.
Expect huge drifts, high winds and EVERYTHING nicely covered with a white blanket.
It's still snowing. Gone skiing!
schools are closed, but good lord I don't think I wouldn't want to be out in this hurricane!!
Any update on snow totals so far in the valley?
my fairly accurate spot out of the path of the nw winds

Really good snow yesterday at Timberline - if you didn't mind the "hurricane force winds". Made about 20 runs - one more fun than the other...
Top of the mountain was indeed very windy, and wind-blown (it was icy for the first 100-foot "dash". Conditions there after were seriously: very good.
Sat Morning:
Get ready for a much better day.
Snow has been falling all night (I measured over 5 inches of new snow since yesterday's snow report). There are couple of wind drifts measuring over 30 inches.
Great News:
Winds are much lower
Snow has been falling (and started again) straight down
Temperatures are a lot warmer (now 17F)
Accumulation is like... well... WINTER for couple of days
Landing zones (terrain park) should be "how they should be" for safety
Timberline is showing off its new "art deco" at the terrain park
Did you Visit Canaan today?
