Hey Vic - any clue when they are going to open Thunderstruck this week?? Have they started knocking down the whales yet?

Check out the web-cam. You can watch the groomers pushing out lower thunder.

Though the terrain was limited, skiing was sweet at Timberline Sunday and Monday (until 1 pm when things started warming up). The snow was dry and it was fun watching all the rooster tails on WL as I was riding the Silver Queen. I'm hoping for more lake effect during the next few days....

PS Vic, any chance of a non-flash ski report. Many people cannot access your reports from work because corporate/gvt servers block the flash you are using. Another person complained to me recently about the issue. I leave home too early to see your updates from home.

John, send an email to sandra@timberlineresort.com and ask her to add you to the ski report list. She sends out the ski report as a .doc file before about 9am every day. It's the same one that's on the website, just a .doc file.

For the NON-flash ski report, go here:
www.visitcanaan.com/timberline/snow-report.jpg
(it's the most up to date report I know of - and usually is online before 6h30 in the morning)

The Update in a hurry:
Lower Thunder: OPEN
Upper Thunder: tomorrow morning
Winterset: OPEN
Twister: Forget about it for a while

Thanks for the update but it won't load.

We need something simple and text driven--something easily accessible from any platform, including smart phones.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier just to create a report like this:

apparently, its a difficult thing to do for some local resorts. whitetail's new website (for this season i think) looks like it was created in the late 90's (minus the social media links) and to boot, you have to download a pdf to view the snow report. confused

Whitetail's website this year really sucks. The decision to float the entire site over the large background photo is distracting. (I'll admit the first load was attention grabbing.) That floating background is likely the reason they opted to use a PDF for the conditions page. They also have effed up several usability details. AFAIK, you cannot access the web cam page from the top menu bar. WTF? Also, they mix using underlines for page links and static text. You need to think way too much to get around their site.

I am NOT in charge of Timberline's website - otherwise I would have provided both version. As it stands, I am providing an interactive version for all smartphones (except iPhones) and a JPG snow report specifically for iPhones.

On the other hand, if you cannot access this link: www.visitcanaan.com/timberline/snow-report.jpg --- then you may have other problems on your end; it's merely an image, so if work doesn't allow images to be viewed, it probably means they just don't want YOU to see any sort of ski report while at work. They want to punish you, and not even DREAM of skiing.

The snow report of snow basin doesn't tell me much (since I have not been there) - they tell me names, and now what??? I have to go on a map... match names with slopes... and figure what part of the mountain is open?

I am getting couple of complaints about the snow report - from people who cannot access the interactivity - but yet, I have heard from so many visitors How Much they enjoy the current snow report (some customers on the lift didn't even know I built it)

JohnFM: you got to dream more about skiing - even while at work. Work to live, don't live to work.

I had not been aware of this report, my fault. Just locked at it for the first time. Very nice. I like it. Thanks.

How can I dream when I can't see the report. ;-)

No part of the Visit Canaan website can be viewed on at least two of the largest government networks in DC (I have called several people to confirm this fact). That not only includes the flash parts of the site but the JPEGs as well. I am not complaining about the site. It's really pretty, but if a large percentage of machines in the Canaan Valley's prime market can't view it, that's a legitimate problem that should be fixed.

Another problem is the flashing trail opening marks in the flash version of the report. It's not 508 Compliant: flashing text like that can cause people to have seizures. No joke.

"Software shall not use flashing or blinking text, objects, or other elements having a flash or blink frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz."

...I might be misunderstanding this, but if you are saying folks who are at work being payed by working taxpayers can't view ski reports while working then there should be a law requiring Vic to set up all the ski reports nationwide using the same format...if I am misunderstanding this then I have an excuse...I am a snowboarder..

Hey Tucker, I can assure you that management and staff in the private sector peruse internet ski reports at the expense of their employers as well. grin

if you can't see a jpeg there is no doubt it's your network's content filtering issue, call your network support/help desk and complain. (an educated non-guess)
but if you like to ski huge bumps, off the wall is off the hook, just watch the temps for sweet corn conditions like this afternoon. crusty it could be a deathtrap!

I'm just a grunt without internet access at work and too cheap to buy a smart phone but I suspect that the only real unstoppable force is the flow information.

Back to our regularly scheduled thread.
