It looks like things are starting to come together for a potential storm Saturday night / Sunday morning. The
GFS model has shown the storm for several days now. Keep your fingers crossed!
Henry Margusity's Forecast: Chris Bailey's PostThis could be the first good snow for the Shenandoah Valley since Halloween!
heading to the valley tonight. Let's see... Friday, sunshine, temps around 36. Saturday, increasing clouds and light snow by evening highs in the low 30s, Saturday night and Sunday, snow, heavy at times. Winds out of the NE @ 15 to 30. temps steady or falling. Total storm accumulation of 10 to 15 inches. How's that sound? I just made it up but betcha it's close. boy oh boy...two weekends in a row.

who will be at WISP on Monday. I have never skied with a DC Skier. I will be there with my son.
Hope to see some of you there.
I like how the weather people talk about Winter weather as if it was a curse, using euphemisms such as "Highest Risk", "Disaster", "Tragedy" ad nauseam... I once met Jim Cantore and gave him a piece of my mind on the issue. He was defensive, but accepted that many weather people don't like Winter.
Yes, snow can be a pain in the derriere but the abundance of water and bountiful vegetation in the East is in many ways, thanks to the benefits that the App snowcap brings to bear. I'm starting to become concerned about next Summer, when we may get a draught as we had ten years ago and its resulting water rationing etc. that we only see out West...
Yeah, agreed on the possible drought, in fact one of the things I am doing in the back yard is to build a catch pond and backing sand pit so I can irrigate the garden.
We /did/ see a bad drought like that here too, recently. Anyone remember the summer and fall of 2002?
Winter storm watch for the Shenandoah Valley, woohoo!
Abe,
Per Chris Bailey, looking to hit Snowshoe and WTG/Mass more than CV?
Sounds like it could be a heavy, wet snow. Good for base building, not so great for freshies, and real bad for power outages.
Sidebar: from the WG web cam, looks like the recent rain hit the valley hard.
I'm picking hot springs,Va as the Honey Spot for this storm..
Just got back from a week in Canaan & after 2 days of Arctic cold Snow we had 3 of the Sweetest Ski days anyone could dream of. Even wed when it was Advertised to really get warm & sloppy it stayed at or below freezing all day (at least on top) with Snow firm & nice almost everywhere.
Which leads me to the rain taking a toll on canaan yest..The valley Floor might have lost most of its base but the Mountain sides barely got hurt at all. I skipped thur skiing But had some gung ho Relo's from England that Skied TL in the rain & they said the Slopes were holding up Great. I went up there & took a 2 year old sledding & I confirmed it. (tons of base) + they groomed out & opened 2 slopes that they had "Whaled up".
Leaving south from the Valley to Harman & over the allegheny Front You could still see whitecapped Mtn tops above 3500' including MPC & tory mtn heading up & over the pass.
I'm thinking that SS only gets a couple more inches than Canaan But bottom line is that the Wv ski areas have Survived & will continue to thrive!!..Long live the alpps!
Argh... holiday lift tickets are too expensive at Snowshoe / WTG / Nut. Let's hope this system drifts a little further north!

That what the models seemed to indicate on his blog earlier today.
BTW, that is a great site. Dunno who first pointed it out here. Wuz it you?
I can't remember if I was the first one to point it out... I definitely keep a close eye on it during active winter weather patterns though
You were the 1st Abe..I've posted that a few times.
I Ck him out almost Dailey but he is human as well as a marketer...He has hyped a prolonged winter onslaught every month starting with the end of nov..
I mostly read his blogs to get a better understanding of the Euro model since my access is very limited & he posts some nice graphics..
After every snow event I posted on his blog how much more snow the Wv Alpps recieved than he advertised & now he seems to Mention the WV Mtns a whole lot more now & he posts heavier snow total maps for the region. Remember..He is a weatherman from Kentucky..Yeh..I know..I'm the man..legend in my own mind!
oh..i forgot...i'll take his 3 to 6 & raise it to 6 to 8...for canaan.
Haha... alright I'll take credit then
6-8" sounds good... the latest GFS bumps the storm a little further north too...
I've never been to Wintergreen but am thinking in light of the southerly storm track Monday could be the day to check it out. Looks like they might catch 6+ inches of fresh snow. Do you think the roads in there will be really slick come Monday morning or do they do a good job of clearing them? Are they really steep and windy or pretty straight forward? I will be in a rear wheel drive car, hence not messing with driving into WV and Snowshoe. Fresh snow two weeks in a row, I'm stoked!
listen to the sound made when a contestant loses...Wahh...wahhh...wowhh...WOwwHHHHHH...Storm is a bust.
Besides shifting way further south than predicted it has shrunk & has lost its "Big Storm" status.
Mount Rogers which is the highest mtn in Va & just north of NC might squeeze out 6 to 8. At one time there were 14 to 16 inch possibilities.
Still watching for "The Big One"...Remember how this season started...oct 28th caught some campers by surprise waking up in the sods to over a foot of snow...or the big snows of 2010...

So it wasn't the perfect storm but it wasn't a total bust either. 6 inches at Wintergreen made for great snow conditions today. Blue skies and temps over 30 didn't hurt either. The first few runs this morning were excellent. It would have been much better however had they had a few more runs open. Over 50% of their black trails were closed and 25% or more of their blue trails were closed. Still there were no lift lines on the Highlands lift and the Acorn lift was pretty crowd free in the afternoon.
8" of snow at Wintergreen on Sunday. Snow was surprisingly dry and fluffy (all forecasts were calling for a heavy wet snow!). While only a little over half the slopes were open, once the snow started falling at 12:30, the day was great. The heavy snow turned a lot of people away... must have worried about road conditions.
Perhaps CV will be able to make up for the non-event last weekend... NWS just issued a winter weather advisory through 6 pm tomorrow, 3-5" forecasted! Winter isn't over yet
Crazy winds here. Can't imagine what it's like up there.
...maybe around
an inch in the foothills to 7 to 8 inches in the highest of
elevations in the northern mountains.
Highs in the mid to upper 50's today & now at 630pm..33 & snowing at 3200' with temps at the top(4300') around 28...26 at 4800' Snowshoe..
Am at Snowshoe since yesterday, today I skied for less than two hours on drizzly but groomed corn conditions with the temp in the '50s. At about 1400 the temperature started plummeting. At 1929 hours, the temperature is 25 with a wind that I would say gusts to over 40 MPH and snow showers. Hopefully it will be steady snow...
24 at the top of the chairlifts in the valley..Wet to powder just like that!...Seems to be more snow in the valley than SS at the moment..Gotta luv it!
PS..kwillg6: 72 degrees at 12:45 PM. dafodills are sprouting...what's up with this?
The other day SS got an inch of snow..When there was no chance given by the weather Auth..
That must have been at the Tippy top since I didn't see any Snow reports from the Valley area with lift tops at 4300'..
