Boots in a carry-on
March 4, 2012
Heading to Colorado this weekend and since this is a shorter trip than usual, I'm looking to reduce the checked baggage.
I know a lot of people like to keep their boots in a carry-on. Has anyone ever used one of those Transpack trapezoidal boot backpacks? Do they fit in the overhead bin?
I think the one I have is
this.
I have one and will probably pick up a second so my wife can do the same.
If unaware, all the airlines permit a ski bag and boot bag as one piece of checked luggage. You often have to remind the agent of that (on this end, at least).
However, I realize you may not be bringing skis and/or (like I often do), fear losing your boots so you pack 'em on board. I don't have the bag you talk, but see more and more of them. I often strap the boots to both sides of a backpack I further bring for carrying stuff to the resort, etc. Also makes for a cool looking piece of carry-on.
Have a nice trip!
I will be checking a double ski bag. It's Southwest, so the number isn't an issue. It's more that boots not arriving on time will ruin the entire trip rather than the first day or two of a week.
Worst case they'll get checked, but I don't want to run out and buy another bag if it won't make it as a carry-on anyway.
Got it. Those do seem to be larger than your average boot bag. My boots, carried as mentioned above, fit fine toes up in the overhead. When tied to the backpack, they're likely as wide as one of those boot bags. If that helps.
But have seen gate agents more miltant lately on making sure the bag fits in those metal sizers. Those seem more rectangular than square - and I could see that being a problem.
Got a backpack? ;-)
It is a backpack. ;-)
I guess if a boot fits, toes up, this should fit. The maximum dimensions are driven by the boots.
Southwest Airlines limits carry-on bag dimensions to 10 by 16 by 24. Just measure. Better yet, UPS everything on the outbound and fly them back on the plane inbound when timing is less of an issue.
just as an FYI, skis.com had a deal that if you spent more than $250, you got one of those bags for free. Their normal price was $69 I believe. I picked up one for my daughter. Everything she needs including her giant size 29.5 boots fits into this bag!

Pretty durable, but I can't speak of waterproofing too well as we havent used it enough to ensure that the boot compartments wont leak into the main compartment. I'm always concerned with zippers as this seems to be a problem in the industry. Almost everything I own has had a zipper failure within 2-3 years and I'm careful. Possibly bad luck? Possibly the companies are buying cheap.
Sincraft,
I have used this bag for several years and have had absolutely no problem with it, even have hand carried on aircraft (but cannot recall what airline). I have also checked it several times with no problems. Had no melted snow leakage problems into central compartment, so far all zippers ok
By the way, where do you live?
The Colonel

I use the high sierra "over/under" bag from Campmor. I've been using it for trips to Banff and am able to get everything I need for the first day skiing in it (except helmet). I take it as carry on.
On the way home this year, my wife was able to check it in as a "ski boot bag" so her double ski bag and "over/under" bag checked in as one item.
On my trip home (I had to stay longer for business) I gate checked my "over/under" bag in and it made it the whole way home.
I also have a high sierra backpack boot bag which works well too but I don't think it would fit in the overhead storage as well as the over/under bag. Also, I had a lady at the airport in NM not want to consider it as a boot bag - go figure!
Have a great trip!
Sitting in Denver International now. No problem with it. However, the TSA in Denver did think my goggles were a bomb.
Skiing was awesome. I'll post some photos when I get to a real computer.
