After this cooler weekend the following 8 days show Canaan Valley averaging only 2 degrees cooler than myrtle beach,SC... 71 vs 69 Degrees...I'm not sure if TL can make it till the Locals cup weekend....watch them have to close early & then the mother of all late season blizzards closes the place down..Didn't Chaga predict that?

PS..if you look at the World temps the US & now parts of Europe(after a brutal Winter) are the warmest places around..A very small area of above ave temps vs a much larger cooler than normal area.
The East coast has really been an anomaly all winter..Next year will be much better..Bet on that!

I'd say the odds are pretty swayed in that bet.

speaking of sunscreen!

I got really burnt on Weds at Snowshoe. My nose has scales on it now. Im actually skipping riding tomorrow because of the sun and how burnt my nose is. I'd have to wear a mask in 60 degree temps.

Are we really talking about skiing at 72F ? Or paddling ? I can do that at 10k elevation on 10 feet of snowpack, but we're talking timberline here.... should be interesting...

Doc blows that magic snow that sticks around til April regardless of the weather, so all will be fine.

We've been skiing T-Line the last 2 days and it has been great spring skiing. The coverage is really good and the snow stayed firm yesterday but became sweet corn this afternoon. Hero bumps on OTW. Tomorrow should be another great day. I don't think Twister will make it 'til next weekend but there should be some good skiing for the Luau.

Yeah Rob, I hear ya. Luau weekend should be ok, but all bets off after that. They are loking at closing mid-week after luau then opening up again on the 23rd. They may have to move some snow around to make it to the 25th. I've never seen so much warmth this early. It's opposite of normal. Should be a day of warmth then 4-5 days of normal or cold. This year it's been 1-2 days of cold then 4-5 days of warm. Crazy!

Just skied the past three days at T-Line with LHC and his family. The snow this past weekend was pretty sweet. Timing in the Mid A is everything.

Horrible forecast for this coming week if you are a skier. Plus now good chance of rain next weekend! Hope that changes.

WL, OTW, Sally, and Upper Thunder have excellent base and should all ski well for the Snowy Luau. I think the odds are good for them surviving until the 24th/25th. (Though Sally could be dicey.) But if the 14 day forecast resembles the 7 day forecast, ...

After that, folks it's looking very, very rough for next weekend.

These are my current *guesses* for this coming weekend (Snowy Luau):
* Lower Thunder - will take some creative grooming to fill in some bare spots near the start of the race course, but I think they can pull it off.
* Twister - snowball's chance in hell. I think it will be grass near the tunnels by next weekend. Plus the one upper west-facing slot will be minimally skiable. Not suitable for intermediates.
* Upper Dew Drop - I think it may be closed also. There are some bare sections which I don't think they'll be able to push some snow around to get coverage. This will be a key trail for keeping the crowds off White Lightning.
* Upper Almost Heaven, The Drop - grass skiing (never officially opened this year.)
* Pass through from lower Almost Heaven to main lodge (below the terrain park) - they may have to sacrifice the terrain park features for that one.
* Lower Dew and Lower Almost Heaven - should be fine. But if Upper Dew is not open, that means Sally + mid-station for intermediates.

There are only two piles of snow I see stashed: at the top of the orange trip and at the mid station. The snow is not where it is needed to get coverage and keep trails open. If the cat drivers can push the snow to where it is needed, they'll deserve some serious rounds at Timbers.

Rob can fill in an update later this week.

...the two piles of snow are needed/placed to push snow onto the lift off ramps...with this forecast the only snow pushing/grooming they will be doing on the mountain is a single trip up and down to push snow from these piles onto and beside the lift off ramps so the attendants can shovel snow onto the ramps all day...i'd be surprised if this isn't the last weekend of lift service at t-line...at best they might eak something out for locals cup on the 25th...

Not just the Mid A. From Mad River Glen's website:

Mar 13, 2012:

Temps are up for sure but so far we have avoided any precipitation and it looks like we may get lucky in that regard, time will tell so stay tuned to the latest forecast. Today we expect temps approaching 60 degrees so it should give us another day of sweet and slushy Spring skiing. The weather forecast for the week is getting dicey so we strongly encourage your to come "Ski It While You Can"! It will be nice and soft out there today for sure and the cover (for now) is holding up pretty well.

That may be my next tagline: "Ski It While You Can"

I think it pays to treat Snowy Luau as closing weekend. 10 day forecast looks rough every day...

true that, those 2 posts are right on...get it while you can...locals cup weekend is always a great time for sure though,,,sometimes its a fresh 18" sometimes its hoppin' around the mud, but its always a good celebration at the end of every season here in the valley..I can't see them not scrapin somethin together for a locals cup but who knows, this sounds like it will be the warmest winter on record in WV...

Good point, but it could be barely cobbled together patches of snow; don't think many non-passholders or non-locals would want to show up. For the others, Ski it While you Can.

Could they stage a Local's Cup race on WL or Upper Thunder? Do they have any portable timing devices?

The worst has not yet hit. Right now highs for Davis, WV are mid to upper 60's every day (one low 60's) through Thurs Mar 22. Looks like the entire eastern half of the U.S. will be experiencing a March heat wave. This is unreal.

Insult to injury...

(March 13th 2012) - "Many residents along the coastline of Oregon awoke Tuesday morning to no power, downed trees, closed roads and as much as 8 inches of snow in a rare one-two punch. This storm will likely go down in the record books as one of the largest coastal snowstorms in the month of March ever recorded at some locations. Records date back to the late 1800's along the Oregon coast. The last coastal snowstorm of this size in the month of March was in 1951 when between 4 and 8 inches of snow fell.

I remember about 4/5 years ago Jimmy and I were poaching the drop on closing day.... we also poached almost heaven, dew drop, and upper thunder after they closed it mid-day. We hiked in to all of them and hike out but the skiing was schweet!!! As long as they can connect a few dots for closing weekend, they will be open and I will be there. They could run local's cup on lower dew and have done it in the past.

I'd pay to see you and Jimmy poach Almost Heaven this year. grin

Any skinny on how the bare sections on Upper Dew and Lower Twister are holding up? I'm really hoping my original predictions turn out to be wrong.

Just talked to Jimmy who is riding up the chair this afternoon. (If Mrs. Jimmy asks, he's still at the office. grin )

Dew and Twister are closed (for good.) Lower Thunder is very scratchy near the start of the race course. Even Sally is getting a bit rough.

I hate being right. mad

Even so, White Lightning, OTW and Upper Thunder should still be good this weekend. Crowds could be interesting...

And we still have three days of warmth (and maybe a few showers) before Sat. Hopefully TL will pull a rabbit out of their Snowy Luau hat and move some snow around to all reopenning of Dew Drop, and better coverage of the other open trails.

I don't think you can do much snow pushing when the weather is this warm. Or even much grooming. And as of Monday PM, there was no snow to push around except to cover the lift ramps.

In all seriousness, all who attend Snowy Luau this weekend should be able to handle White Lightning. It is a black, but it skis very easy. I'd say it would be a blue or double blue out West.

Otherwise, you'll only be skiing from the mid-station on down.

Yep, Twister and Dew Drop appear to be done. Even Thunderstruck and White Lightning are growing thin in spots. OTW is still in good shape. Gonna be an interesting weekend.

Click on Hi Res button. Then position the +/- cursor over T-Lines trails, and you'll get an even more detailed image. (IIRC, the web cam rotates 360 deg, so you may need to time it correctly or look at past images.)

You can see where the bare spots are.

I'll be shocked if WL and OTW aren't fantastic this weekend. Same with Upper Thunder. After that, ...

Ski notes: bring plenty of rub-on wax if you have any. (Rob will apply/buff it for you.) I didn't hit any rocks last weekend skiing everywhere, but I got a substantial amount of dirt on the bases. As the snow base is melting, in some spots it exposes what fell on the trail earlier this season. Plus any grooming will kick around dirt, rocks, leaves, etc.

I would be surprised if they don't push to get Dew open. They have done it in the past but it all depends how much as baked off with the heat. We're gonna scare 90 today in north central VA.

From T-Line ski school per KWill:

Quote:
Got the skinny for the weekend and beyond. Dew and twister are gone. They hope to keep others open throughout the weekend, but you know how that could go. It's a tribute to Amos and the t-line staff to have what they have after this non-winter.

Beyond luau.... resort will close monday through thursday, reopen for the final weekend. Probably only from mid station but they are trying to make it when nobody else will.

Local's cup on the 25th, with end of year festivities. I'll be there through the bitter and sloppy end cuz next December is a long wait.

See everyone on Saturday!
