Heading east from SLC to Summit County, CO I decided to stop overnight at Glenwood springs, and ski a day at nearby Sunlight. I arrived in town yesterday, 3/12, and began my stay with a soak in the famous hot springs. It has not snowed here for more than a week; days have been unseasonably warm and nights just below freezing. So I started late, 10:00, hoping for sun softening. It didn't happen until 1 and meanwhile I explored. Sunlight is a combination of Okemo and Mad River. there are mild blue and green cruisers, which do have interesting rolls and switchbacks. Off the sides of the switchbacks are some eye opening steep chutes through the trees, lots of them. on a powder day it must be heaven. I'll bet many an Aspen local can be found here on such days. Today was not one of them. But I did hit the magic hour when the most sun exposed blue run turned to perfect corn. My Sunlight pass was free, since the area is one of the partners on my Monarch pass. Sunlight is the low priced and nearby alternative to the Aspen areas. It's spring break and everyone I rode with on the lifts was from Texas. Ok with me, few of them ski in the trees. smile
