Date: Friday, July 13
Time: 6-9 PM (times may change a bit closer to the event)
Location: Rock Bottom Brewery, Arlingon, VA (in the Ballston Common Mall)
URL: http://www.rockbottom.com/arlington
Why: Cuz we are derelicts and need practice for our ski tall tales

Rock Bottom is metro accessible, walking distance from the Ballston stop on the Orange Line. It is also just off I-66.

This is a repeat of a successful event last summer. Looks like we have a core group who should be attending again this year. Everyone is welcome.

Let either me or JimK (nominated him as wing man) if you plan on attending, so we can try to reserve enough tablespace in advance.

I'm hoping to make it (luckily, I work in Courthouse), but I don't know what our softball playoff schedule looks like. So, I'm a definite maybe.

Would love to attend but too far to travel for the night. Will you be doing a pre-season GTG at your place again?

Depends on status of my house. Plenty of work to be done inside to support a gang. Some stuff broke.

And

Just found out a 70 foot tree fell into my back yard. Friends staying there cuz they lost power. Bad mojo in DC right now. I'll deal with it on Tuesday.

Big thunderstorm on Fri night. Knocked out power to 1.5 mil people in DC metro area. I still have no power at home on Monday. 95-100 deg temps don't help either. Had an all you could eat BBQ grill-fest of meat from freezer over the weekend at my house. tired
At least when there is a power outage like this in winter it usually means we get a bunch of snow with it!

PS: hope to hit Rock Bottom on Friday the 13th grin

Hey hope you get a nice gang at this. Our power came back on about 5:30 last night. The other nice thing when this happens in the winter is you don't have to eat all the food in your freezer, just put it on the front porch until the power comes back on. Good luck and be safe.

I was at Snowshoe when the storm hit. It was amazing. Having been born - as well as having been stationed with the military - in the tropics, I've seen too many hurricanes to count. This was perhaps one of the worst. Besides lasting three hours at mountain top at Snowshoe, it left us with no power, cell, internet, gasoline sources, you name it. We were stranded on top.

My fervent appreciation to the management of Snowshoe. For two days, they dispensed complimentary food to the several hundred people stranded on the mountain. Yes, all you could eat and free. You couldn't go inside the restaurants because there was no power, but they managed to stage the best grilled food on the planet. And with the assembled masses at the Junction, it was easy to propagate information on the (very) few gas stations that were open, as many folks were on top on fumes in their cars....

Returning today, there was a huge effort at power restoration and debris clearance all along Route 28. As of this morning, there was still no Internet nor cellular service on the mountain, although the electric service was restored on Sunday.

Not this year. Too much destruction from the storm. Practically none of it originated from my yard but Virginia law is what it is. I'm pretty pissed right now.

I had no idea how widespread and destructive that storm was. We were on the very northern tail of it with a few showers. Take care all. I hope life is returning to normal.

I got off very easy compared to others. But, I got screwed over big time by some circumstances I saw coming, but legally, couldn't do anything about. I'll talk about it over beers some time.

Once we get a final rough headcount, I'll contact Rock Bottom to try to reserve a table.

With my work schedule, I don't think I can get there before 6:30. Can someone volunteer to serve as the table coordinator from 6 - 6:30? Denis? Crush? Djop?

If we start at 6, I think the odds are better of us getting a table section reserved for us.

If anyone wants, PM me for my cell and I'll guide you to the crew. I think all of us have met each other, with the possible exception of scootertig (Aaron?)

Thanks Denis. I may be able to make it there by 6 also, but I'm not 100 percent certain with work coverage. I'll call you this week wrt any logistics (i.e. table for X under Y in this section of the bar.)

I may have a guest, my 15 yr old grandson is here this week. He is a member of the Mad River Free Ski team. Not much of a talker but interesting if you can get him started. Then again, Grandma may come up with a more interesting option than hanging out with a bunch of mostly over the hill skiers.

Connie, still on, anywhere from 8-12+ of us.

I made reservations under the name John for a party of 12 at 6:15. I asked to get a table off to the side, if possible.

Enjoyed the company of all who attended. Special thanks to John and Denis for making the date and saving us table space.
I was a little late and broke out the camera even later, consequently didn't get photos of all who attended, but here are a few shots:

Wanted to get there, but I got tied up Friday afternoon and didn't get home until after 6 PM. Then would've been the almost 2 hour drive in from Culpeper (with traffic). Maybe next time. Wanted to share some of the info I got concerning CV/t-line but will need to do that later in a forum.

Ok. What I've been told. Not necessairly all correct but it's a beginning.
First, CV. Lodge is in the middle of being rebuilt. It's amazing how this is being done building by building. More, bigger, better rooms. The tubing park is being moved across the access road from the B lift area. Snow making ponds being constructed. Other improvements to be done the rest of the summer and fall. If there is a real committment to snowmaking, they could be back. We'lll see. BTW, the locals are now going to the Aspen Room (lounge) on Wednesday nights for fifty cent wing nights (they're great!) and Thursday for fifty cent taco night. I had the super large clams and can say, as a clams fan, they were the biggest, most tender and best I've ever had.
Next, t-line. Improvements in snow making again. More guns, improved infrastructure, and hopefully (not confirmed) more pumping capacity. Don't expect anything like lift improvements. The will fix the problems the queen developed last season so hopefully no more stoppages.
The opening of Big Al's Pub and Grubberia (formerly Tuckers) has been a great addition to the valley. That business is putting the hurt on Timbers but that needed to happen to get Doc to wake up and improve offerings and stop micro managing that staff. Most of the old Timbers staff is now at Big Als. That may tell you something...
I'm going back to the valley this weekend and will try to pry more. Stay tuned.

Dude, this is the Mid-Atlantic and Timberline we're talking aboot. We're used to fuzziness in facts. And snow reports (until Vic arrived.) And openings and closings. And ... smirk

Tell the locals to not carried away with the bow saws and clear some more hidden stashes to be in plain view of tourists like Jimmy.

Haven't seen any of that this year, John. Last year's un-winter seemed to cure the desire to glade made.
